Can't you just hold down the eject button while powering up and the cd should eject?

I stuck a piece of cardboaard into the slot loading drive and stopped the cd moving forcing it to eject and then ity booted into OSX straight off so obviously it was trying to boot from cd

That was really bad luck! Were you able to repair the drive or did you have to reformat and start over?

Also most drives have an emergency eject hole which you can insert a paper clip or pin into and force the disc to eject. I don't think the computer even needs to be on for it to work. I've had to do this quite a few times in the past.

it was trying to boot from the cd in the drive

to get it out i stuck a piece of cardboard in to stop the cd spinning and it spat it out i then later learned holding down the menu on apple remote brings up a bootloader
