Building a machine for a mate - budget is €800.

HDD, monitor etc. etc. all catered for - what's the verdict on these.

He'll play Flight Simulator X, a few other games, do a bit of video editing - a wee bit of everything really.

    Thanks in advance...

    That is a lovely build,
nice price as well, good choice maybe you can help me because you obiouvsly know what your talking about...

Im trying to do a good workstation on the cheap - got a DFI nforce 4 mobo today with a nice gfx card - trying to sort out components - looking at a opteron 165 or something similar - im on the s.939 path, any ideas? Will be running 3 or 4 accounting programs at the same time, not praticularly intensive stuff but can be...

I'll try - gimme the model of your mobo and what other components you have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭zappb

Mobo is Lan PArty DFI NF4 SLI s939 dr with raid/lan/nice sound etc...

gforce 6800 Ultra PCIe with Zalman HS

Thats it so far - currently looking for RAM & CPU - this are the most important components - will get 2 hds for mirrored raid,

    what do you think?

I'd say have a look on ebay for some S939 X2 3800+ if you can find one if not get the Opteron 165. AMD have pretty much killed off S939 X2 dual cores pretty quickly so there are hard to find bar one or two of the expensive higher end models.

If the worst comes to the worst & you cant find anything try and sell the DFI nF4 board & just get an AM2 board + X2 3800 for €244.

The MSI board comes with sound/lan/raid and uses passive cooling if I recall most nForce 4 boards don't and have a noisy little fan on the chipset.

up to 2.60 GHz with the Dfi board.

If you need ram I have some for sale at Adverts.ie

    @OP:
    Better build IMHO would be:
    • Gainward Geforce 7900GS - €210
    • Intel Core 2 Duo e6300 - €193
    • MSI P965 NEO-F - €113
    • Twinmos DDR2 PC5300 - €106
    All prices Komplett

I say e6300 because even a small OC will take its performance beyond any AMD CPU currently available ;) And a better GPU is more important than the CPU in games (plus it means he can turn all the lovelyness on in FSX!)

Is there such a big difference between the two spec's?

I don't want to start any 'Intel Vs AMD' maalkey but a) the guy wants/likes AMd and b) is there that much of a difference between mine and your choice of processor? I've read Intel dual cores are 'better' than AMD, but by how much?

Actually, blonde moment and brain fart together - I've seent he error of my ways K.O.

    The Intel route it is.

Thanks for the replies and cheers for the spec K.O.

Comments of the case and PSU - OK for this build?

Opterons are pretty much being thrown off the shelves atm. You can pick up a good stepping 165 off ebay for around €100 if you keep your eye out. I know thats what I paid about 3 months ago BEFORE the prices started plummeting on newegg, and from reading the american tech forums the majority of Opterons that are getting released now are the ccbbe06xx steppings, which are rated 3Ghz+. A Dual Core Opteron clocked over 3Ghz for just over €100... you can't beat that bang for buck performance. Read around, everyones who's not caught up in the c2d hype is moving over to 165

    I'm currently selling

    a athlon64 san diego fx-57 2.8gig a (lot faster than the x24600)
    1 gig ocz ram
    bfg pre oc 7800gtx 1400mhz 256mb 24 pipelines
    an 520 ocz mod stream
    asus a8n sli firewire mobo

    all in perfect condition

I'd let that lot go for around 800 and it s a far greater spec than you've listed

Isn't this guy on adverts selling nearly exactly what you are looking for? You'll get 2gigs and a better gfx card also and i'd say you could get the stuff for alot less than €800.

Placed the order - I love spending someone elses money :)

I went down the AMD route, mostly because that's what the guy wanted.

I tweaked the spec slightly - better RAM I think and a better GFX card (I hope!)

Anyway, here's the final shopping list - allfor the princely sum of €846 ex. delivery.
    • 323807 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz Socket AM2 1MB, BOXED w/fan, 65W

    • 320520 MSI K9N Ultra-2F, nForce 570, Socket-AM2 ,DDR2, 2xGbLAN, ATX, PCI-Ex16

On a seperate note. If anyone does see a ccddexx opty anywhere, Can you please pm me the link to it. Need one badly. Thanks :)

    Back on topic....

Bottom of the line c2d will do perfectly for what you want. Evn though id call it over kill for whats needed. just a normal amd 3500+ or even lower will do what you need.
