How to install printer on MacBook

    Hi,

I am having problems installing a printer on an MacBook. I have never used a mac before. The MacBook is running OS X 10.4.

The printer is a Canon Pixma IP6600D.

The printer is connected via USB to the print server which is a US ROBOTICS Wireless MAXg Router 5461A.

The printer prints fine from the Windows XP PC also connected via the print server.

To install the printer on the Mac to be used through the print server it says (the manual) to install the printer on the MacBook using USB first. I did that and it printed fine while connected via USB.

The next thing it tells me to do is install the printer using IPP. To do this I found using cups through safari was easier. I loaded up http://127.0.0.1:631/ and I followed through the options - Here are the options I picked at each step -> I typed in the name of the printer -> "Device: Internet Printing Protocol (http)" -> "Device URL: http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer" -> "Make: Canon" -> "Model:" and here lies my problem. Even though I have installed the printer using USB thus the drivers must be installed, The model of printer is not shown here i.e. it is not letting me choose my model of printer.

When I try to install the printer using "Print & Fax" in "System Preference" it does not show the printer driver there either. I click on "Other" whereby I can choose the printer driver (I Presume) but I cannot seem to locate the correct file either via the CD or via the driver file I downloaded from the internet.

    PLEASE HELP ME!

Why is my printer driver/model not showing up? How do I pick the correct printer driver? The only drivers showing up are a load of Canon BJC Printers and other makes and models.

    Thanks for any help/advice,
    Noel.

Can anyone out there give me some advice? Anyone have any idea where I could be possibly going wrong?

    Hey ya,

I can't help but I suggest drop your question into UCSM newsgroup.

If you have a newsreader software it's uk.comp.sys.mac
or from your browser try google groups for access.
    http://groups.google.com/group/uk.comp.sys.mac

You should find folks that may be able to help you there.

    Cheers,
    Peter

I presume the wireless network end is set up and functioning ok, IPP would normally pick up any printers connected to it's local network. Have you checked that the firewall isn't blocking port 631 ? Also the usual printer utility I use is in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Yep, the wireless network is working fine.

Is their a built in firewall in OS X 10.4? As I said, I haven't a clue about Macs.

I tried using that first but still could not find the printer driver. When I used CUPS it showed the printer and showed its status which changed to offline when I switched off the printer but I could not find the driver for the printer from the list provided even though I had installed and tested it using USB to connect to the printer.
