First time tube amp buyer - advice??

    Hey
I have GAS, for shame, for shame :o

Looking for good tube head, have my eye on the H&K Trilogy http://www.thomann.de/ie/hugheskettner_trilogy.htm and also considering the Mesa Boogie Heads but they're pricey.

Still undecided on Marshal JCM's (although currently use Marshall AVT head thing as a stop-gap since my line 6 broke).

Am playing funk/soul kinda stuff with a Mex Strat as me weapon of choice. Also have Mex Tele & Jap Tele as backup and am considering an USA Strat perhaps in the new year. Cab-wise currently using a couple of single 12" Mesa cabs. Pedals include Ibanez Tubescreamer, Boss Chorus, Boss Distortion, Big Muffffffffffff, Boss Wah (looking at Vox Wah though!) and a few other usual suspects...

For now though, I'm amp shopping ;)
    Anyone any recommendations or suggestions?
    Any H&K users??

For funk/soul I'd suggest trying something more classic. I'd guess you're looking for a nice clean sound which you can tip over into some light to moderate saturation, which is not a feature for which Mesa Boogie, H&K, or Marshall JCM amps are particularly renowned. A Vox AC30 or AC15 might work, or a Marshall SL. But probably a Fender Twin or something of that ilk is what you should be looking to try out.

    Also, they're valves - we're in Europe. ;)

Cheers Eoin, I had thought seriously of Fender Twin but as I'm already using 2 Mesa Cabs I kinda wanted a decently powered head that I can integrate with ease. I may get a 4x12" at a later stage just for flexibility but in honesty I don't fancy lugging a Twin around to small ****ty gigs so versatility is an issue!

I did consider the Fender Supersonic head, but had reservations about its power. I don't think I can justify the Mesa cash, especially as they seem to be geared towards the nu-metal sound (or have I heard wrong??).

I've tried a Vox (AC something) a coupla years ago and hated it, had that Kinks-esque 60's brit rock vibe which I thought was bloody horrible. So much choice....

Sell the Mesa cabs and get a Deluxe Reverb or Deville or Twin Reverb or something. Fender are the best for cleans as a (very) general rule.

Hmm... have you ever played a Marshall JTM45? You could probably pick up a JTM45 head to go with your cabs.
