My girlfriends Dell Inspiron 510m laptop came with a DVD RW drive (DW-D56A-DF) which i think is manufactured by sony. (Its branded dell but i found out that sony make them after a bit of research).

anyway i tried to burn a dvd today in Nero and after over an hour of Transcoding it just failed on me. She mentioned to me that she cant burn cd's or anything on this drive at all, and this is really doing my head in

Its says on the log that it failed to get "Disc-at-Once" working. I was trying to burn a DVD+RW which the drive says it burns. It used to burn cd's no problem at all, i never tried to burn a DVD on it today

It plays DVD's and audio cd's grand, its just burning thats now a problem

The Laptop is running XP SP2, and i've researched this for ages but could find nothing. i'd chance anything at this stage....

Thanks lads i'd really appreciate any help as its the only DVD burner i have...

included is the log file from nero

You are already running the latest firmware PDS7 on the drive which is actually a Sony re-badged Lite-On SOSW-852S (which you can use it's firmware if you crossflash).

I can tell from the log you are using Ritek discs which is not a good idea as this drive apparently doesn't have the best in terms of media support so I would stick to only the good brands. (Ritek = poor quality media)

Get Verbatim discs or Plextor branded ones as they always use Taiyo Yuden media which is the very best quality (if the drive cant write TY then it is a hardware problem).

Also try this uninstall all CD/DVD burning software that's on the notebook like Nero, Sonic whoever and once it is all gone install CopyToDVD demo version and see if it writes the media.

i'm using maxell branded discs, well so it says on the box - i cant read the media id off the disc with any tool it says "Logical unit error". i thought maxell were good media?

No idea what Maxell use but it is probably a mix of various media but Ritek is there in the Nero log as the actual media manufacturer for one of the discs you used.

What I would try is the removal of all other writing software (you can put it back if this doesn't work) then try CopyToDVD with a Verbatim disc and see if it burns. If it doesn't well you can continue to test the drive via other methods by plugging it into another PC via an adapter or call it a day and replace the drive.

You could also chance the the crossflash to the Lite-On firmware but I am not familiar with how Lite-On handle the master/slave setting in the firmware of notebook drives. If you flash the firmware with it set incorrectly you will disable the drive as notebook drives must set either in the firmware to work.

(Notebook DVDRW drives failing is a very common thing)
