Eve startup tips etc.

All the talk here of eve has given me the bug once more and I've done the foolish thing and resubscribed.

Its quite awhile since I've played, so I'm looking for suggestions as to race to take for some casual play. I'm looking for guns and fun with the minimum amount of mining/knitting involved.

any of the new bloodlines can give you some decent fun. you can get into most of the decent cruisers with minimal gunny/missile/drone skills in about 5 days. (go through fleet command when making the char and get frigate 4 as a starting skill). within a week you could be pirating noobs and such

cool, Are the races pretty balanced or are there any which would recommend against or suggest over another.

in a sense they are balanced, ideally for the most balanced start you want to aim for about 10 in each attribute.

Well I bit the bullet and went with the caldari for no other reason than their ships look the best

Same name as here in eve so say hi, but not via the barrel of a gun
