New who's who thread

I've been thinking about this for a while. The old one is too large for the amount of people who post here and the majority of the info is out of date. So if I could ask you all to post in a similar way in the brand spanking newly labeled: "Introduce Yourself!" thread.

It should be an annual thing to renew methinks. Cos we can't talk about it in the new thread itself, if you have any opinions please post em here.

A blow in eh? So you're just doing some research here cos they don't have the equipment in UCD is it, yeah I have some friends doing phds that have to go to galway for this reason. They're experimentalists though

I didn't realise UCD was so badly stocked on pens and paper?

and it's the taught masters that is run between a few different colleges
I chose trinity
(cos it's handiest :P )

If you're still bored ApeXaviour it might be worthwhile trying to clean up the 'links' page. Possibly drop the Maintenance Grant Scheme page (though some people might still be reading it for all I know).

well the official title is "msc mathematical science"
I'm doing qft and gen rel here which is why I'm always moaning about them in the moaning thread
and i'm just doing algebraic topology in maynooth for the moment
I was supposed to do some other course in tcd, "groups topology and geometry for physicists" but apparently it's not running this year... which I only found out at the last minute... yay for trying to make up credits
if only i'd studied harder last year... I mean, studied at all...

in the thread itself people list "jf" or "ss" or other letters before their course titles that I can't figure out
do those somehow mean what year youre in or something or just some course titles I haven't heard before?

JF = 1st year , Junior Freshman
SF = 2nd year, Senior Freshman
JS = 3rd year , Junior Sophistor
SS = 4th year, Senior Sophistor

I've been told I can do an undergrad maths course here in nuim or a project with the mathsphys dept, since I want to do a phd next year I'll try for the project for experience... we'll see...

Outta curiosity, what do the med people call their years? I'm assuming just by numbers or else things would get a little complicated. Or is there an SS in medicine?

I think they go JF-SS, then 5th and 6th.

Yup, though Med is moved/moving to 5 years so right now you hear these wonderful things like 6th (New 5th year).

In fairness as head of a school in college he has a redilicous ammount of administrative activities to do in the college, but he's not what you would call 'accessible' anyway.... and rather demanding of anyone around him... it gets rather annoying...

Most people in a physics dept will never have done a QFT course to the level of Samson's course, and its being taught by maths instead of physics as its really more of a maths topic, we have other lectures who can do it, but as i said i think he has to do it.

samson just assumes everyone is at the same level as him...bit of an ole genius at these things, just doesn't comprehend people not getting it as quick as he did...

As an aside, something a bit nicer for ye, the results in his class are usually really really good...nearly everyone gets 1st's iirc
