Michelle Wie equalled her worst score in a men's tournament to languish in last place after the first round of the Casio World Open in Japan.
The 17-year-old, who has only made the cut once in 12 male events, carded nine bogeys to post a nine-over-par 81.

The American said: "It was frustrating but I don't think it was the pressure. I'm not playing that badly.

"I don't think the score reflects my play. I just need to get my confidence back with my driver."

Wie started on the back nine in light rain but bogeyed the 12th and then rolled in four straight bogeys from the 14th.

The Hawaiian teenager failed to sink a single birdie and finished the first round last out of 102 players.

Japanese players Tetsuya Haraguchi, Yoshikazu Haku and Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot were tied for the lead at five under.

Wie made the cut at the men's SK Telecom Open in South Korea in May but has struggled in her last three male tournaments.

She withdrew from the John Deere Classic with heat exhaustion and finished last in the European Masters and 84 Lumber Classic.

She has yet to win a tournament on the LPGA tour in 33 appearances.

she should focus onn the LPGA tour first there's less coverage so less pressure, how can a 17 year old kid possibly be that comfortable with the media attention, i'd say that pressure effects here, plus i think she may be a wee bit too immature to realise she's not ready yet for the PGA tour

She just isnt good enough yet and finishing last is very bad for her confidence.
Her long game is good but her short game is terrible but that will improve with time and practice.

what's her coach/manager playing at, either they're encouraging her to do this or if they're objecting she doesn't listen, either way seems ineffective

she is a very motivated girl but i agree that it would really be better for her to strengthen her foundations before competing at such a high level.

i agree, its a shame, cos she is obviously talented... needs to ground herself first

though she is a cracker, and must be a distraction on the course to those fellas!
