At first glance I thought "of course they hit the cities!", but upon reflection: (season 2 spoiler)
starbucks apartment, the coffee shop with bunker etc....that whole series of events at the start of season 2 has perfect buildings in it
    .

Maybe they were dirty bombs? Infect the civilian population with radiation sickness and you get the planet and infrastructure without too much physical damage.

Ok, so you can't eat the food or drink the water or breathe the air, but i can't really see too many robots having problems with those criteria

But we see giant mushroom clouds during the attack, and numerous detonations on the planets surface.

I dunno how you'd explain it really - unless certain areas of Caprica were purposely left intact. After all, we haven't really seen alot of the other cities/colonies apart from the one general location.

you would imagine that they would take out government and defense buildings and all that and then use some sort of chemical bomb to knock out the humans.

This is set in 2008 or some other time in the future so it is possible.

No it's not set in the future or at least I don't think it has been specified yet. They were not living on earth  . Who knows if they do find earth we may still be burning witches or traveling by horse and cart. There is nothing to show it is even in the present day although it probably is for the sake of convenience and loyalty to TOS (although loyal it hasn't been, not to any great degree thank god).

It does seem a bit flimsy but maybe not inexplicable. Neutron bombs do produce an explosion but their main purpose is to kill organic life while leaving infrastructure intact. Surely that sounds like a favored cylon weapon.

We only know of one city for sure that wasn't destroyed.

We don't know what happened to the other cities (do we?

I don't know what time it is based in
i would hope for a interesting turn of events if earth is quite primitive it would make sense the travel time to earth using what we can only assume are primitive Kobal era ships with stops along the way would be much longer than travel time to the other 12 colonies.

there's necessarily any flaw in continuity here.

Maybe they nuked the crap out of a continent that had the major concentrations of spaceports/military facilities on them.

Maybe each continent had a centralised power system or something and that's what they nuked.

Leaving much of the urban landscape relatively intact but blitzing it with radiation.

from what we saw there where multiple detanations all over the planet.
You might be right it would make sence to target power generators instead of cities

I think they said at some stage in the mini that the nukes had a power of 50 kilotons. Thats a little more than the bombs dropped on Japan. But nowadays nuclear weapons can be 50 Megatons if not higher, with the exception of Neutron Bombs have a power/yield in the range of kilotons, so it would seem they used a Neutron Bomb. Why would they use a regular low yield atom bomb otherwise? Neutron bombs cause far less destruction (to buildings) than your average nuke, allegedly..

Small scale tactical nukes to eliminate military targets.

Indeed, the Israeli's are supposedly countenancing the use of such weapons against Iranian nuclear sites (according to last weeks papers).

yes thats true subterranean mini nukes to simplify
Also there is something on shoutwire that they actually test fired one of these mini subterian nucular weapons during the Lebanon conflict

But a small nuke would still wipe out a good chunk of the city, which didnt seem to happen. A neutron bomb wouldnt destroy the city however, so it would stand to reason that they used one.

Oh and tactical nukes include neutron bombs.

Why? Reasonably small scale tactical nukes hitting military targets (which would most likely be on the outskirts of urban areas or well away from urban areas) wouldn't necessarily destroy all the cities?

And anyway - we only ever saw one surviving city on Caprica. Maybe the rest were hammered. Maybe they weren't. We don't know.

    Yes it can.
