[Request] High power LEDs, luxeon etc.

I see many ebay sellers with alleged high power leds, if somebody knows of a reputable one or a online store that sells genuine ones please let me know. Many of the stores have electrical ratings that do not add up, some negative feedback is from people saying they are not as bright as they should be.

I would also like a link to a forum discussing designing lights with high power LEDs. I want to design my own bicycle lights using high power LEDs. I found this one http://www.candlepowerforums.com

http://www.radionics.ie have 3W real ones, for about €15 + VAT but that just means you should be able to source them for half the price elsewhere ;) - then again postage on ebay would probably cost you €15 anyway

tried to do this too, and tons of lying Hong Kong sites, 3W LED's with 45 hours on AA batteries, just doesn't add up

RS also have data sheets and while they aren't cheap the gear is usually high quality.

two different types - first is 2.3 watts the second 3 watts - I haven't gone through the data sheets to check if they will run off a pair of NiMH batteries or of two Duracells would be too high - LED's without resistors are very easily damaged by over voltage - double current if 10mV over  (but most small super brites I've used are OK on 3V with out resistors)

A typical Bicycle dynamo produces 500mA (3W/6V) nominal with a peak of ~600mA into a short so two of the LED's below in inverse parallel look interesting ( since AC only half current on each cycle )

you could try this site http://www.flashlightreviews.com. American site, but pretty good review of high output torches (of flashlights as they call them).

We went into mediamarkt in Berlin a few weeks back, got some of these torches, jesus christ .. I bought a small pen sized one, buddy got a bigger one for around 45 euro, the thing would totally blind you.

Beer + high power torches in the dark ... Personal disco . .

Cheers guys. I found the flashlight review forum via candle powers, very good.
Also found an interesting site giving the real ratings for batteries

    http://www.rechargeable-battery-review.com/aa-nimh-battery-performance.html

Capt'n Midnight- yep I get stuff in work from radionics, like a convienience store, have a lot but is a damn ripoff! but at least you know it is genuine. Post is not too much on ebay since they are light. Some of the forums will guide you to decent sellers, ebay or elsewhere. I would like a lot of beefy batteries stuck down in my seatpost tube part of the frame. or a load of AAs spanning the handlebar tube inside.
Lots of the ebay sites do have crazy specs! I got this one since it was cheap and will do around the house.

he also sells what he claims are 3W luxeons.

some reports of fakes are just fake manufacturers but could well be equivalent. most sellers hour ratings are way too high. one guy selling will say 5hours, another will say 30hours for the exact same item.

3x1.2V nimh would suit the lower voltage one you showed. Have to do more reading on the candlepower forum, it is disturbingly large and active! forums about everything these days...

    # 3 Watt Luxeon LED will last forever ( 100,000hrs )
    # Using LUXEON, No replacement Bulk Required
    # 3 X AAA batteries last for about 50 hours
an AAA NiHM battery would be ~ 750mAH so 50 hours works out at 15mA average current. Taking 2.2V drop across the Osram I posted above gives a power output of 0.033W ! (2.2V x 15mA)

It's in the order of 1% of what it's supposed to be

    www.dotlight.de

These guys sell nothing but LED. I got the GU10 fittings in both High power single spot & regular 21 spot led. The high power (3w) give about the equivalent of the standard halogen lamps but are €18 whilst the 21 spot led lamps give about 15watts for just 1w of power use. (€6.49). Service is good - about 7 - 10 days for delivery.
