Move jobs soon or later.

    Hi,

I recently started a thread here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055015068 and have pretty much decided that I will try to move jobs. I've being in my Software Engineer job as a graduate for approximately 16 months, and also had prior 8 months experience as a Test Engineer as part of my college course.

Thing is, I reckon I shouldn't move until I have enough experience. Should I hang on in my current job for another few months in order to get 2 years experience here at one job, or would the combination of the 16 months here and the 8 months work experience be adequate?

And of course, would there be much demand in the marketplace for someone like me?

A brief idea of my skills is as follows:

    Visual Basic 6
C/C++ for both Windows and embedded systems.
Assembly for both Windows and embedded systems.
    Installshield/Installscript.
Telecomms, Networking, Computer Architecture knowledge from college.

Average knowledge of hardware design/electronics and using VHDL. (But would prefer to steer away from doing this stuff, apart from creating software for embedded systems.)

Why not test the market by applying for a few jobs? You don't have to take them.

As TempestSabre says, there's nothing to stop you from applying for a few jobs. If you're not happy in your current position then you might well be better off moving on sooner rather than later and starting to gain useful experience in one where you want to be. Approx 18 months is a reasonable length to stay in a graduate job. If your skills are good and you present yourself well to a prospective employers then it shouldn't be a negative point.

After I graduated I left my first two software dev jobs after less than 12 months. The first was an awful position and I probably should have gotten out sooner. The second job was reasonable but I decided that I didn't want to be stuck in that area of software after another two years. I ended up leaving software and moving to a specific niche of Linux/Unix system administration because I already had a background in it and an interesting job came up there. Obviously I need to hang around in this position for a bit longer than the previous two.

The obvious answer is if you can get another job then take it if you want it. As a software developer, your test engineer experience doesn't count.
