can the new PSP's be modded. As in, if i went into a shop today and bought one, could i run homebrew after altering the FW?

Currently it's firmware 2.71 and below that can be homebrewed.
Doubt very much if the new ones in the shops are that old that they're running 2.71 though.:(
There's also something about the circuit board inside the PSP needing to be a certain type, or you could end up bricking it. Not too sure on that one though.

Best bet is to buy a secondhand one with firmware less than 2.71, and you should be ok.

saidly no, there are exploits for the 2.71 fw of psp but none as good as the 1.5

you can buy a mod chip that will let you run any fw on it, but they are hard to install and expencive
