Power problem with old Gateway Server

I may have a generic power problem but I'm not sure.

I have an old Gateway server (very old, ALR 7200 Pentium II running Windows 2000 but perfectly adequate for my personal needs) I haven't used it for a while and I find that when I plug it in (never mind turning it on) the power LED on the front panel flickers on and off and there's a clicking noise.

When I try to turn it on, nothing further happens.

The documentation, which I still possess makes no reference to what this indicates. It basically says, from what I can find reading the index, that the power LED comes on when you turn on the machine and says nothing about what flashing and clicking indicates.

Is this a generic problem? Does it sound like the Power Supply is hosed? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    Any help appreciated.

A clicking sound would indicate that your hard drive is dying. I'm not aware of any other PC component that would emit a clicking sound. Open your PC up, take out the various components like the RAM sticks, PCI cards, AGP card etc. and put them back in. Sometimes reseating these components helps with a PC refusing to start. But only do this if you know how. Else find a computer knowledgeable friend or acquaintance to do it for you.

Actually, it's the fan. What happens when you just plug in the power cable is the LED indicator on the front starts to flash and the fan tries to start up but it doesn't actually and makes a clicking noise as it rotates, feebly. It's as if the system is still switched on, only it won't power up at all. Pressing the power button does nothing. Nor does pressing the reset button that usually restarts the machine after a crash.

Thanks for the advice anyway. I'll try the laborious process of reseating the memory sticks and cards and see if that works.

    cheers

could also be the powersupply , they can fail with a chirping noise but at different frequencies can sound like a click,

disconnect the power cables from the drives to rule them out

on good old AT PSU's you had a real on/off switch and could disconnect everyting apart from one drive and work out where the prolem was by a process of elimination, ATX need a working motherboard to work ( or you could use a resistor to short out two pins, but if not care ful you WILL kill the psu that way )
