    Hello,

I have took home a HD from work today to try get the info off it.
This morning the pc wouldnt start up,it would go as far as the windows xp screen and 3-4 secs later there are noises from the Drive and then goes into the the option of "start in safe mode"start "windows normal" etc...you can hit enter to try or wait the 30 secs. This just keeps repeating itself,
This is what i was going to do so tell me wat ye think !

(A)Stick the Drive in the freezer for about 4 hours then try again ?

(B)Stick it in my own pc and just try recover most of the files and throw the drive in the bin as it will act up again ?? (set to a slave ?)

Let me know what ya think.

    Thanks

Just set it as the Slave drive (jumper settings on the rear of the drive) in your own computer and copy what you can off it.

Can someone confirm these jumber setings ???
    Its a "maxtor"
    "diamondmax plus 8" (40gig)
i looked it up on there website and as far as i can make out if i want this as a slave i just take the jumper out ????? so no jumper ??
i take it that this is the setting i need to try and read the info from the drive ??

You put the jumper on the Slave pin, marked SL. Plug it into the same IDE cable that your main hard drive is on so the bootable hard drive would be Master and the other hard drive is Slave.

Normally the drive will have a pictures of the pins to be shorted on the drive label , or pins will be labeled

freezer - put bag in sealed plastic bag, wet electronics are not a good idea
if it works then backup data immediately, the freezer trick is not a cure, it's just to get you to the finish line

maxtor made several kinds of drives , pins varied a bit

CS = Cable select - cable should be marked IDE0 (end) for master and IDE1 (Middle) for slave

the drive will either be master or cable select, in either case disconnect the CD drive on the second IDE cable and put the drive there - no messing with jumpers.
