Im thinking about getting a HDTV and XBox360 for Xmas. Im wondering what resulution are the 360 games made for? Is it 720p? Im thinking about getting a 37"/40" or maby 42" 720p or 1080p tv.
What resulution are the games best viewed in?

Also, regarding HDTV's. I notice that alot of HDTV's in Ireland are in 768p, not 720p. Why arent there more native 720p lcd's around?

    Hi Kev.
From what I know, and I'm not completley up to speed on it yet, the 360 supports 720i, 720p, 1080i, and since there was an update the other week, 1080p.
Obviously, if the game wasn't originally encoded for 1080p, it wouldn't look the best at 1080p resolution. I heard a rumour that Halo 3 is going to be the first 1080p game.

As for the tv question, haven't a notion!:o

most 360 games are made in 720 ,1080 res would reduce the frame rate.look at aldi.ie ,lidyl.ie they both have 720/1080 tvs for sale this week, with vga for 360 hd connection,or composite hd.Maybe you might need 1080 if you get hd dvd drive ,or blue ray or skymovies hd.Or 4 watching hdcontent from a pc in 1080.IF a tv has HDREADY STICKER, IT CAN SHOW HD,look at label,or ask assistant does this show 720p, 1080i..it needs 1034x768 res to show 1080i.theres some tvs hd compatible 700euros,that have 800by sumthin res, in others words, they show 720hd.probably.ANY PC monitor connected to xbox 360 ,will show 720,or 1080 high definition games, some dvds ,may be hdcp protected in 4 years time.A 768 lcd will show 720,resolution,anyway.YOU might be able to get a 37inch plasma hd tv that has,720resolution if you look round power city harvey, norman , approx 800 ,in the january sales.IF you are prepared to buy a non 1080i,tv, you need either vga connector on tv,or composite hd connectors to get a HD 720,0R 1080I DISPLAY from a 360.

ammm, you got a few things wrong there.

1080i = 1920x1080 - however, it is interlaced, so in each frame only 540 lines are shown instead of 1080.

720p = 1280x720 - progressive scan - so every frame - the whole picture is shown.

You need COMPONENT or vga - not composite to get HD from the 360.

    1034x768 - well I assume you mean 1024x768 - that's a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution - it not widescreen - I can't imagine many people buying a non-widescreen HDTV.

Also, I'd have another go at editing for clarity - or stop posting while drunk.

Dont read too much into Gamer's post, its mostly wrong.

Native resolution for games is 720p, Splinter Cell I believe was the first 1080p capable game, im not too sure though.

There arent any 1280x720 sets around, its just a small scaling done in the set to get it to 720p native, dont worry about it they're all 1366x768, some projectors have a native reolution of 1280x720.

Go for the biggest possible screen size you can, the bigger(when your talking about HD)the better.

The Splinter Cell rumor was a mistake by a Ubisoft representative - it was subsequently corrected.

As for bigger = better, that is true if you are comparing like with like, however, I wouldn't suggest buying a 32" Acoustic Solution (ie crap in Argos) over a 26" Samsung or Panasonic etc. Its a lot of money to be forking out - make sure you get a decent quality screen first, then worry about size.

Sorry its Component , or VGA connector installed on the tv to get hd on a 360 console.MY advice get 37inch,or 42inch widescreen 720p,or 1080i tv ,with vga and component connection. You,ll need a tv with hdmi connector if you want to watch hidefinition tv or hddvds in the future,if they enable all the hd copy protection built in to hd content.Power city is the cheapest place to buy hdtvs ,if you wait till the january sales you could save 250euro on a 37inch tv.2 weeks ago i saw a hdtv HDREADY 42inch widescreen ,720p 1080i in power city last 1 left, 1100 euro.Depends on your budget ,try and get tv that has at least 1024x768 resolution at least ,preferably 100mhz tv.
IF you are on a budget for 360 use,id prefer to buy a 42inch tv with 720p resolution, than a 37inch tv with 720p ,AND 1080i.I,ve seen 720p 40inch tvs going for 800euros,but they are hd compatible ,not HDready. If its not labeled ask about the exact screen resolution before you buy the tv anyway.Connect up xbox, component ,select hd output ,if you have a hd set ,with the switch on the side of the hdav cable, supplied with console.Games will display in 720p hhidef, 99percent of xbox 360 games are programmed in 720p.If a game is designed for 1080i it will display on your hdtv as 1080i ,as long as your tv has 1080i capabilty.IF connecting a pc set resolution at 1024x768 60mhz refresh rate, just dont go over the resolution of the tv set.Do not go over 1280x 720 pc resolution,if you are plugging a pc vga into tv , connectting your pc computer to a hdready tv.Right click pc screen ,click propertys, settings ,change resoltion, color on pc should be 32bit,highest quality.

There are 1280x720 sets around. The sony KDFE12 50" hi-def tv has that resolution and the 360 looks great on it. I've played it through my friends set. Its a nice set for €1500

That's a rear projection TV that comes under projectors in his post ;)
so should the xbox res be set to 1366x768 in vga for high-def or something else ?
Any source should be set as close to the panels resolution as possible. So for a 360 with vga go with 1366x768 and for component go with 1280x720.

Wasnt sure about Splinter Cell, thanks.

Got to second that, compare like with like spec wise, then think about the size, spec is more important.

On what planet do you think that that is readable?

Take a deep breath, use full stops.

erm, yes there are. - Pretty much all of them are.

In fact, comparitively few are anything else. These "others" are 1280x720, the non HD Ready 1024x576, and the 1920x1080.

He's talking about panels with 1280x720 resolution, which are very rare.

    Most are 1366*768
