    Any recommendations on what to look out for ? Any brands to steer clear of ? Any advice gratefully recieved :)

    It does sound bad.

    I have a pioneer dvr-433 myself. Very happy with it.

    If I were to recommend anything, I would suggest you ignore the claims of "max hours recorded" which are all done at the biggest compression, crappiest picture.

    Go read reviews on which recorders have the best picture quality, features, ease of use, etc etc.

    My 433 has only 80gb HD but that equates to 20 hours at full tv quality. I record and delete. If I want to keep anything I burn to DVD.

    Thanks for advice, we rushed out and bought a philips one this evening....... seems ok, time will tell. We had ordered Sky plus but when the guy came out today he discovered our signal was blocked by a tree.......gutted or what !! Hence the impulse buy to cheer ourselves up, it's no sky plus but at least we can record stuff and pause live tv etc...........
