    From C+VG

The joys of having a Wii on launch has come to a sudden, disturbing end for a few gamers in the US, who've reported an online update fed to their console through the WiiConnect 24 service has killed their new console.

According to IGN, faulty consoles affected by the update display an error code indicating the nature of problem, with the most fatal codes being 110213 and 32002.

Users who experience problems can either contact Nintendo to get a replacement console sent to them or, if their Wii already contains data they wish to keep, they have to send their console to Nintendo for repair.

But it could be almost two weeks before a working unit is returned to them, in which time said gamer, who may well have queued up for many hours in sheer anticipation of getting their Wii, could turn homicidal and hit the streets to batter people with their temporarily useless Wii Remotes.

It's America - anything can happen.

While failures are very hard to avoid I always thought Nintendo had very high production values

Shame on you nintendo, I am dissapointed

Apperently it was caused by the data coming off the WiiConnect24 servers which were totally overloaded at launch.

Yeh, 110213 is a WiiConnect24 error... Probably similar to a 503/500 error on a pc.

I might prevent my Wii from Connecting to the net for a few weeks after launch. I don't really need Virtual Console games for a little while, what with Zelda and all, and the news and weather features won't have launched.

2 weeks is the maximum amout of time they are allowing for, but people are getting their systems back as quickly as 2 or 3 days.

Although with Nintendo of Europe we should probably allow for 2 or 3 months for them to get their fingers out.

I may go the safe route and not allow it to connect to the net for a few days after the launch. Is it a problem soley with the load being placed on the servers?

From what i heard from the americans is that the update flashes the rom chip and some of them are getting bricked during the process.

I don't like this next gen of updates. Every console seems to be getting bricked some way or the other.

As apposed to last gen when consoles were merely destroying discs and setting themselves on fire?

well i don't remember hearing so many stories of consoles dying straight after launch with the last gen.

Infact the only things i remember was xbox scratching discs in japan and ps2 drives not reading discs (usually after the warranty). Also there was the fault xbox power supply a good bit into its life.

But lets have a look at this gen. Every console has failed after launch. Some due to firmware updates.

I had all four of the previous generation (if you include dreamcast) and never had any problems.

It's no worse than the "3-red-lights-of-death" now is it?

oh don't talk to me about that. Fookin MS!!!

Out of a big group of lads I play xbox live with, nearly half of us have had faulty 360's. Some only once, others are now on their third.

You're talking about 20 people out of a group of 40-50. Thats shocking!!

Another advantage of being in Europe. NoE have said Wii Sports comes with a proper case unlike the States which got a paper sleeve.

The brick problem came so close to launch. This effect was the same with the x-box 360. Lucky for nintendo they caught it just before it went out and ordered their staff to put a disk with the wii for the proper working up date however some of them still got through and have bricked. It is not known how many units have gone down but it is not ment to be seen as badly as Microsoft got it. Unfortunatly for microsoft they did not notice the problem till after the launch. If you buy a 360 now you will not get the problem and I'm sure you won't have the problem with the wii when it is released over here.
