I'm only thinking here so I don't want the purists to have a go at me........

I have a brand new exhaust on my Merc:
    220%20D%20-8%20003.jpg

It actually sticks out far enough.
When I drive the smoke is noticable, but normal.

I was wondering if I could change the end of it to point down so the smoke might be less visible and annoying to other road users:

    - is it OK to modify it like that or does it need ot flow straight. There is a very strong blow on it
    - I assume any exhaust centre can modify it, rather than place a new back box on.

Just get one of those go faster chrome bolt on exhaust tips from any car accessory shop. 15 quid, 15 minutes, and the job's done.

ah come on now even I have limits!

I don't think it will improve your situation much as the same amount of exhaust will still come out, and because its hot it will still go up.

I've solved that problem in traffic by adjusting my rear-view mirror so that I can't see the smoke behind me. ;)
If you can't see it - it's not there!

I guess the problem is that the blow is so strong it literally shoots the stuff out the back!

If it was shooting it downwards it would go down, believe me!
It might not stay down for ever but it might make a difference.

Seriously, a car accessory shop... you can get all sorts of exhaust tips - single chrome pipe, twin pipes, pointy downwards pipe, chromed wavin pipe for the boy racer brigade...

You don't need to wear dark glasses or anything - just go in and ask have they the pointy downwards variety of exhaust tip.

oh, I guess I'll look but I'm not keen on coloured or chromed tips. I'll see what they have.

You could cut off the tailpipe and weld on a downward curved section of the same diameter, but it's be a lot of effort to go to when you could cheaply and easily affix one of those downward pointing clip on yokes as another poster has already said. Advantage being you can easily take them off if you want the car to look original

ok I get the idea! I was just wondering if you can get clip-ons that are not chromed etc. I think it wouldn't look right. I was guess that an exhaust centre would be able to do something.

More importantly I was wondering if modifying the shape of the exhaust tip would affect the car in any way. I guess the answer is no.

sorry, i wasnt thinking when i read your post. No the change in directio wouldnt affect the cars performance as long as it was same diameter, and yes, i have seen non shiny downturned pipe cover in motor accessory store in limerick

No the direction wont matter !

its a good idea, and if you call into an exhaust centre they could sell you the pipe, made from the same (non shiny) metal that you have. You could even cut one off a scrap pipe if it were the correct diameter !

Go to a motor factors that sell Bosal exhausts. Bosal also do the tail pipe tips that curve down. They don't look too tacky - I have fitted one to a 190 Merc for exactly the same reason and it looked OK! Believe me - I don't like bling on a car ;)

    thanks Atlantean!

well I went to Halfrauds and they did indeed have a chromed tip with downward point for €20. I was tempted to buy it there and then. Perhaps the chrome would'nt be too bad. It would match the exsiting chrome bumpers and would dirty up after a while. But a pal with me said he bought one and it corroded badly.

I'll drop into a motor factors on the way home.

Y'could try looking for a stainless steel one - won't corrode and if you want it dirty, fine. If not, you can clean it.

Well I've rung a crateload of motor factors and they all said they can only supply chromed ones... except for one and he happens to be on the way home so I'll go and take a look this evening. I think it was a Bosal too.

You can get the original at MB for ~ 16 Euro. Spare part number is 115 492 0914

    interesting Andreas. Thanks.

I called into a motor factors yesterady and all he could offer me was a stainless steel 90degree exhaust pipe. Get a good interference fit... and hacksaw off the joint. It was €15.

Andreas, do you have a link to a site where I can research/view those parts? Also, it has a brand new full exhaust on it and the tailpipe is 50mm... I'm guessing this is the same as original. Or is that part a bolt on?

i've been on to mercedes and that part doesn't point down, so they say, so I'm going to get that other pipe, and cut it off and clamp it on.

I had a Bosal on mine till some tea leaf stroked it  It showed no signs of corrosion after a year and a half on the car.

was it chromed? I'm still not keen on the chromed look.

    Here is what I'm doing:

I'm buying the (black in the pic) 90degree stainless steel piece to fit over a 50mm exhaust tailpipe.

I will hacksaw off along the dotted line.

I will snip out some metal (in red) so that I can put an o-ring clamp over it and clamp it to the tailpipe.

Hmm, no idea whether a site exists. I get the printed spare part catalogues once a year from the MB Club i'm a member of. It contains prints of the parts as well as part numbers and prices. I think due to copyright restrictions the catalogues are not available online...

Then the guys did not check carefully enough. This part is available and listed in the EPCs of MB.
