Would anybody have any recommendations on a cheap Upscaling dvd player .
Just ordered the Miria tv from laptops direct and i want a player for this .Also would the cheapo HDMI cables from Komplete be ok for general use .

I have a samsung HD850 and that is an upscaling dvd player. It's pretty good and you can make it multiregion.
I shouldn't see any problem with the cheapo cables from komplett, considering you are upscaling a SD source and not actually viewing a HD source.

aye, samsung hd850 here as well...there are firmware out there that let you do some nifty stuff...divx, region free, upscaling over component..the value is in what you can do with it afterwards

Yeah, I'd assume the 860 must be the updated version!
I wonder what has changed, if anything at all in it.
Does anyone have the HD860 to comment?

They should be absolutely fine , HDMI is a digital stream , this is totally different to the old Analog feeds and providing all solder connections are good the cable will function at 100% with no difference in signal quality between a 100 euro cable or a 16 euro cable , thats one of the beauties of going digital.

In other words , Gold connections and fancy cables are of no benefit to HDMI , there is no such thing as signal quality in terms of digital cables , they either work or they dont.

Sony DVp-NS76 is a nice upscaler. Either 720p or 1080i.

Does anybody know if my Samsung Theater kit supports " upscaling " or could someone describe to me exactly what upscaling is.

I have it hooked up to my Samsung 32" LCD through an expensive Component cable ( spent a good bit, wanting quality ).

Thats the one, if someone could tell me. Thanks.

    Upscaling:

DVD's are recorded in PAL which is 576 lines.

your TV is HD -720 lines (or 768 native)

Your TV is already an up/scaler - because it scales the 576 lines up to fill the screen. Otherwise you would have a lot of black surrounding a small picture.

The only reason that you need an upscaling dvd player is if the scaler in the TV is not working as well as it should.

This is most noticable with "lip sync" where if you are watching a dvd and decoding the digital sound. the picture takes longer to appear on screen because of the mathematical stretching of the 576 lines into 768 lines.

Most newish amps have an audio delay, that forces a delay in the sound decoding to account for the delay in picture processing.

Personally, I don't see the need for an upscaling dvd player because you are not getting a better picture. It is not suddenly getting 720 lines out of that old PAL disc. Like I said though, the only reason to get one is if the scaler in your TV is crapper than the one in the new DVD player.

    L.
