I'm getting the train down to cork next month. Is it worth paying the extra 20 euro or so to go first class.

What does one get for your 20 euro?:)

Quit the advertisment Citygold is not first, its 31 euro extra each way, first is 11 extra each way. Avoid Citygold like the plague till the new train is sorted out

In reality you are much better off booking a standard class seat, booking in first is heading towards mandatory, anyway seats are a little wider little more leg room thats it, can't guarantee it will be quiet if anything more likely get a muppet glued to his/her phone. Only selling point for first to Cork is its got power sockets on the new train

I managed to go first for free (with the train managers permission after seats reservations went wrong) a few weeks back and while it was good crack to play with the seat recline button I won't be going first again unless someone else is paying

Now if you want your Irish breakfast citygold is worth it, then again the breakfast is 11 euro the only difference is table service

So for an extra €31 each way you get a more comfortable seat and table service but you still have to pay for food?

If I booked first class on a two and a half hour flight food would be defacto and at no extra cost.

Check out Eurostar's "Leisure Select" service for a journey that's about as long as Dublin-Cork:
    Leisure Select
'Exclusive carriages offer spacious, comfortable seating and ‘at seat’ wining and dining – the ultimate in on-board indulgence’

And that’s why we’re the first travel provider ever to offer separate business and leisure carriages – so you can enjoy being pampered (without worrying about spilling your champagne all over the guy in the next seat’s copy of the FT). Enjoy.

    Leisure Select – at-a-glance

Dedicated carriages for exclusive Leisure select use
    30-minute check-in
