I am a regular poster elsewhere on Boards. I have created a new account to get help.

I am sure I have BED based on www.bodywhys.ie description. I am looking for a therapist/psychologist to help overcome this.

Could someone please recommend a private practioner in the greater Dublin West area. I am willing to travel anywhere in Dublin though.

    I am a 32 year old male.

If there are ethical issues I would appreciate advice via PM's.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Not sure that you are supposed to discuss personal issues - check out the charter for the psychology forum. Perhaps your first port of call could be your G.P.?

There are some good books available until you find someone who can help. Here's one that I have found useful.

    Thanks Gibs.

I read the charter and was very careful to word my request.

I am looking for a recommendation of a professional that works in this field and is respected. I dont want to go around the houses with my GP as I am aware of the way things work in the Health Service.

I am not looking for diagnosis or advice, just where to find a specialist that works in this area.

    Thanks again.

Yes, definitely no diagnosis / advice to be given on the forum. In addition I don't want to see any names of any professionals being posted on the thread regardless of whether it's to say something positive or negative.

Also, the second post on the charter page might have some useful directions for you in addition to the advice from Gibs. Also, don't rule out the GP option, and there's also contacts and support on the weblink that you've provided - maybe you'd feel more comfortable starting there.

(This has come up before, so maybe the charter needs updating...)

Bodywhys actually provide a list of professionals who work with eating disorders. I don't know what the criteria are for inclusion on the list - perhaps you could ring them to find out.

Generally, you should probably try to find someone with as much experience specific to eating disorders as possible. Many people with eating disorders have a range of difficulties and, depending on your circumstances, you might need to access someone who can address a range of difficulties. Ring the professional in question, and ask what their qualifications are, what their experience is and what approach they use for dealing with eating disorders. They shouldn't mind being asked about this, and might actually be happy for the opportunity to discuss it with you before you turn up for an appointment, in order to avoid disappointment. When you are happy with the answers, you could arrange for an introductory appointment.

Research evidence appears to suggest that CBT or some variant of it, is the most effective approach, but different people respond better to some approaches rather than others.

You may have to just try out a few therapists. Getting a recommendation may not be that helpful - sometimes a lot of the success depends on there being a good fit between what you require and how the therapist works.

    Best of luck. :)

Bodywhys is actually very innovative. They run an on-line support group which is facilitated by a psychologist with specific training in on-line therapy. It's a brilliant facility for people living down the country where there may not be enough people to run a live support group; and for those who are too anxious to attend one.
