What do you think he has? What type of player is he? The looser he is the better a push is as it becomes more likely he has 2 pair rather than a set, and also betters the chance he will call with 1 pair. I would probably just call without a read.

Alot of this would be player dependant. Against the average player, the only hand we're realistically behind here is 55. I cant see him open-limping 99/QQ/AA and he wouldn't get to the river with 77.

His most likely holdings are one pair or two pair hands like A9 suited or maybe even TJ for an open-ender that missed. Without a better understanding of his post-flop betting patterns and tendencies, I think I call here.

I would just call if he seems pretty solid
Ax doesnt call a push A9 might and the rest of the time it will be a set

Of course if you have been a loose fish get then push as this will get you called here by lots of hands behind

i would open limp with 99 from time to time and i know lots of solid enough villains who do as well

Good analysis, I was so sure he had 55 maybe 99 hence the call. Didn't really think it through, ran out of time. Think most people check raise with a set when the ace turns. As soon as he makes what looks like a blocking bet (wents a showdown as cheaply as possible) I instantly jam the scroll bar the to right but backed down and just called. That old mantra he's not calling if he doesn't have you beat kept poping into my head as I was making my decision.

Pretty basic hand just think I lost alot of value. Extracting max value/going broke from big hands can really change a session and something I need too work on.

    He/she had A9.

I dont think i've ever open limped 99 playing 6 handed let alone 5 handed. Would you open limp TT/JJ? What do you think the advantages are of open limping 99 in a shorthanded game?

Don't see any if the table is deep stacked.
I open raise 22+ at 6max unless the table is crazy. If a weak opponent limps from EP I usually raise from the CO/button to isolate.

Again utg i dont expect to earn much from 99 unless i hit a 9 but there is plenty of players (including you ) that will raise and 3 bet with air and I can call them down if the flop isnt to overcardy(its a word)
And occasionally I hit a 9 and its pretty well disguised

Again I have done this with both TT and JJ and even QQ if the right players are in late postion
This is possibly because i can lay these down on the flop as well where with KK and AA i struggle so i make sure there is some action

I can never understand why people say the villain is "pretty solid" when the HH demonstrates that he/she is a total donk.

I might be wondering what he thinks you have here? Have you showed down any MP raised hands, what sort of range are you open raising with prior to this?
It is hard to tell without any good info but in a 1/2 game I might be thinking of limping UTG with 55, not sure about 99 but you can't rule it out. I wouldn't rule out JTs here either, although, I would possibly open with this hand, 5 handed.

Its a call, I think, but grab hold of those cheeks!

EDIT: I replied to this without reading any other replies, its a bit redundant now!

I used to never open limp 99 TT or JJ from any position, now I do it quite regularly from early position, and sometimes after other limpers. I dont think it makes much difference; and a flexable approach is probably better.

At lower limits it makes sense, but anything including 3/6 and above I think you need to build the pot pre-flop to stack your opponent with a set.

    I would say the opposite.

I had to say something cause I knew I'd get asked.:o
I don't really have much time for reads at these levels. I mean I will pull up HH from a big pot and see how they played it but when your 4-tabling its hard to take notes on 20 other players. I mostly just trust my gut.
As I move up I know I 'll have to know my a opponents better and practice game selection but for now its all about my winrate:p

Why don't you use these then???
Just knowing his VPiP, PFR and TA can help out hugely in tight spots like this and should increase your winrate... certainly they'll be more help then how he might have played one big pot previously...

hmmmm maybe I will get pokerace see if anything changes no harm in trying it out. I just don't want to fall into the trap of making loose calls based on numbers from a small sample but I can see how it can be profitable over a long time.

you can set pahud so it will only give stats on players you have e.g 300 or more hands on so you when you see thier vpip etc you can trust it more
