Last night I downloaded an AVG free anti-virus programme, ran it and it found a virus (which I think was called beavis?) sent it to the vault as it said itself and restarted the laptop. Now when it starts up only the desktop picture shows up, no icons, no menu. I can still get task manager up but thats not going to solve it.

I tried starting it in safe mode and that didn't make any difference either. I tried choosing the last good congfiguration option when you press f8 but again no joy. Is there anything I can do at this stage? Is it completely bolloxed or will the local cantec be able to figure out what's wrong? Any advice would be appreciated.

When you run task manager, is explorer.exe in the list of processes?

I tried to file->run task->explorer and it didn't work, I got a warning which I unfortunately can't remember now... I'm not at home now so I will have to check later if it is in the list of processes.

    If it's not, what then?

Ok so I checked and explorer isn't running in the list of processes. I can't get it to run manually (new task->explorer.exe) and it was working last night until I restarted it. Should I reboot from the cd and try the repair option?

Yes. It's more than likely a registry setting that AVG deleted when deleting the virus... the repair option will let you edit the registry(obviously be careful :))

Try remember what the virus was and google it...

If that doesn't help, try google the actual symptons

i.e. "explorer not starting after reboot AVG"

**** it, didn't work. tried running sfc.exe as I read on a different site but the window won't open for some reason. found out some more info on the virus and that I should have run kav personal with explorer taken out of the processes list before I started but it's too late to be thinking about that now. I also found on the microsoft help page that I can edit the system.ini file which may help does anyone have any experience of this?

at this stage I know that I'm missing the exeplorer.exe file and also the system32\dllcache or at least that's the info I'm getting when I search for them in command prompt...
