    Hi All,

Was looking at these last week when they were 179.99 and thought they were good value then, but was in PC World in Liffey Valley today and they dropped another 20 to 159.99, so took the plunge, its actually a Samsung Spinpoint 400LD in it and it has an aluminium case, runs pretty cool. Anyway I reckon its a pretty good price for a store you can walk in and buy.

    Cheers

there in a couple of places, they are at a end of one of the stands but not as u walk in the door, its kind of the back of the first lot of stands, they are also on a bottom shelve around the dvd drives I think they had a good lot, ask one of the sales folks to show you them if you can't find them and don't let them tell u oh we're out of stock as they had about 30 on display about 2 hours ago.

    Cheers

Does the drive run of the mains or is USB powered?

Runs off the mains.... (its basically a HD enclosure with a 400gb drive in it).
I don't know if its a dealbreaker, but the drive doesn't seem to have any cache.

I think anything over 100gb needs to be run from the mains.

Got one of these on Sunday in Carrickmines. The had a huge stack of them just inside the front door. Works well right out of the box. The included back-up software is fairly crap, but there is load of free backup software on the net if you need it. They run very hot - but I think that is they way they are designed - the solid aluminium case acts as a heatsink.

Don't want to upset anyone who bought one of these, but having purchased a freecom product in the past (burner - not HD); IMHO, Freecom products are unreliable in the long term.

In each case the USB interface electronics went faulty, the first one with a month to go on the Warranty (lucky!), the replacement went about 1 year after I received it. At least the drives were fine, but I would not trust the USB interfaces to last.
When they did go faulty, it started with bit errors, then the read speeds got slower & slower (verified with Nero DVD speed) until finally took 1 hour to burn anything.

I'm not saying these drives have the same USB interfaces, but I'll never buy Freecom again.

Does that basically mean if there is a blip along the way during the transfer you lose everything

Anyone recommend decent backup software to use with this? As mention above the software with the drive is rubbish.
