Problems burning to 16x DVDs

I've tried burning data from my pc to a blank 16x DVD but I get error messages from it. My drive is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-3450A. I've downloaded a firmware upgrade from the dell site but it didn't fix the problem.

    Any ideas?

You might need to give more details
Whats the error message your getting?
What software are you using to burn the disc?
Is it failing before starting to burn or during burning or after when verifying the disc?
What type of media are you using?

I've tried to burn discs with both nero and DVD shrink. The 16x DVDs are: imiation DVD-R 16x compatible. It says on the side of the box "Lower speed drives might need firmware upgrade to write this media".

In Nero the error messages say: Illegal disc, other ones say: unable to write to media at 6.1x (even though it's set to burn at maximum, which is 8x).

I get the error messages as soon as I put the blank 16x DVDs in the drive. Since getting these errors I've still been able to write to 4x and 8x discs without any problems.

I just checked the NEC website, they're saying my DVD drive (NEC DVD+-RW ND-3450A) is not supported by them because it's OEM.

I bought my computer from dell and I've already tried their site to get a firmware upgrade, which I downloaded and installed and it still won't work. Will I just have to go looking for lower speed DVDs and give up on the 16x ones I bought?

buy better quality discs , verbatim, and they will write at 16 no problem 9.99 at harvey norman
for nec firmware have a look at

    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3500/
REMEMBER FLASHING YOUR DRIVE CAN KILL THE DRIVE AND INVALIDATE YOUR WARRANTY(IF YOU USE HACKED FIRMWARE)
the safest way would be to buy the verbatims
