The All Ireland Junior Sub Championships take place in UCD on Saturday, Dec 2nd.

Anyone who's seen the warriors of tomorrow at other Sub Championship Ireland events will testify to how exciting youngling matches can be.

Anyone who wants to come out and offer support is more than welcome. UCD policy prohibits us from charging spectator entry fee but we've have a collection for Barnardos children's charity at the event.

    Thanks,
    Colm

Will you have a catagory for Teenagers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Juniors are under 16s, so yes, you'll have a chance.

There's a pin only division (usually primary schoolers) and a sub division (post primary).

With the subs, I stop them the moment I can recognise the submission. The guys who fought in the Dublin Open under these rules seemed happy. As the sport is so new to Ireland, it's difficult to strike a balance between giving the teens as much freedom as possible and keeping them safe.

Why dont you just do proper BJJ instead of stopping it when you recognise the sub because Im sure me and they rest of the competitors would recognise when to tap especially when a few of us have competed in the Irish Open

Not everyone in the sub division will be as experienced as you are. In competitons as opposed to training some people get carried away and may be a bit rougher when it comes to applying techniques so it's fair to say there is a greater risk of injury due to late tap out. It shouldn't be a problem because Colm will only stop the fight once the submission is in place so ruling out jumpy explosive escapes he probably won't stop fights prematurely because they would tap anyway.

I understand completly.Im probably one of the least experienced competing(two competitions).Im not giving out its just that it would be better and you'd learn more from full rules.I was at the Dublin Open and there was the same rules and colm stopped two of my fights prematurely when I could of got out of them.It should be a good event and I hope I do well enough under the circumstances.Anyway thanks Colm for orgainising. You cant get enough competitions.Bye!!!!

    bjj-fighter,

I really admire your enthusiasm, and trust me that I do want to give you guys as much freedom to compete as possible.

Most of the people at the Dublin Open were competing for the first time, and didn't compete in the Irish BJJ Open, so you've more competition experience than them. :D

Think for a second if someone got hurt with a sub at your age. You've 70 years of life left, do you really want to have a dodgy arm or limp for the sake of one comp? Also, a lot of the parents don't understand sub wrestling like you do (since you're training in it) if they saw an injury all our clubs could be in trouble.

And finally, some advice from Tom Oberhue, SBG Black Belt, awesome kids coach and all around great guy. "If you're world class at escaping submissions, that means you're world class at getting caught in them in the first place."

I run my classes like this all the time (adults included). Get your positional escapes down and then you don't have to worry about last minute escapes from submissions. Shrimp!

I know its annoying to get a referee stopage (its happened to me), but just take it as a learning experience: Its always better to avoid getting caught in submissions than to rely on your escapes anyway

I thought this rocked. I've always been involved in the simultaneous adults competition before and never seen the virtuoso performances these kids are capabnle of giving.

Owen Roddy - "just go out there and have fun. Enjoy yourselves"

Colm - "Roddy's kids like to shoot, so sprawl. The northsiders like the judo throws so keep your hips lower than theirs"

    Beautiful.

    All kids rocked.

Thanks for the great comp,Colm.Im a bit disappointed and pissed off at two of the stoppages in my matches but its important to be gracious in defeat and well done to the guys who beat me,they out bjj'd me:D ,anyway thats life and **** happens.Next time I will be better and will work on not getting caught in a submission. Some of the kids really shone yesterday and I was impressed by alot of them.Glenn from the junior subs B showed again how great he is and its amazing thats hes only 16.Thanks anyway and I'll see ya next march:D

lol! Well my kids don't have a cornerman during their competitions so I've got to give them some advice. You heard my original speech dude, and I don't think that would have gone done well!

Well done to all the competitors, like The Shane said it's never dull with them. High paced, action packed, with some nice technical wizardry the adults would be envious of.

    3. Adam

    Merit Awards
    Technique - Anthony (SBGNS)
    Heart - Cian (SBGNS)
Competitor of the Day - Emma (SBG)

Some guys really stood out as exceptional future prospects. Off the top of my head: Nasher for his ultra calm yet technical technique - the dude's four!; Stpehen, one of Owens - solid jitz; Andy (Spartans) - a technical phenom and it showed on the mats; Patrick for his submission excellence and great attitude on and off the mats. There were loads of others but that's who I can recall now.

The submission division really began to step up, a lot more technical than September and all the competitors were really careful in their matches, which is the main thing.

We also raised over €200 for Barnardos.

And what's more important is all the kids and parents had a great day.

    Thanks to:
The Shane - for being my voice and first aid on the day
    Bill - for timekeeping
    Roper - for scorekeeping
Dan - for ushering and running
Mark - for taking care of the warm up area
Owen and Richie -for looking after the active competitors

And a special thanks to the competitors and parents, without you we wouldn't have a sport, simple as that.

    Roll on March,
    Colm

As a parent of one of the children who took part in the competition in UCD yesterday, I would like to congratulate all concerned. The boost in self esteem was much evident and I suppose I am a bit biased but Coach Owen really is the business. He is a great role model and he could teach us all a thing or two about patience, perseverence and tolerance.

Great that the money raised is going to a good cause. Well done to the organisers, everyone who gave their time for free and of course the future world champions.

    Thank you all so much.:D

Hey I wanted to add to this but haven't had a chance until now. For those of you who don't know, I coach about 40 or so kids. I used to teach Taekwondo, but over the last couple of years I've transitioned to BJJ/MMA which is what the kids in my club learn now. Anyway, my point:

In my years as a coach and competitor in TKD/Kickboxing, I never once, not even once, saw a competition that took care of young athletes they way they should be taken care of. The tournaments either took no interest in the kids at all, or were over competitive, encouraging kids to just swing at each other. Now obviously there were exceptions in terms of coaches and parents, but I never saw a tournament set up for kids in the way that Saturday was. Or indeed the way that the Dublin Open and NSC kid's sections were. Long story short, my own club is still "scarred" from an over expensive, terribly run tournament that cost parents a lot of money and gave the kids involved a very bad taste of competition, such that many parents withdrew their kids from my club and those who stayed will not allow their kids to enter another competition. 2 years later I still have difficulty convincing kids and parents as to the benefits of competition.

The reason I'm stating this is that I was struck by the friendly but competitive nature of the tournament on Saturday. It seemed to me that everyone there had the best interests of the kids at heart. Even the opposing coaches complimented good technique on the part of their opposition and encouraged both competitors. Any kid who was there on Saturday is going to go home with a good sporting mindset and a great experience to go with it. More of this in Sport and we'd have a healthier nation methinks.

    Just my two cents!
