How are preorders filled?

OK, here goes. A lot of us have preorders with various shops around Ireland for the Wii. My question is - are preorders filled in the order in which they were placed - ie Mr A ordered in September, Mr B ordered in October - Mr A - gets a Wii.

Or is it, whoever turns up first on the morning of the launch gets one as long as they have a preorder?

    I think option B, re*ac*tor....

The problem with that is a shop can have 15 Wiis, but 20 preorders. So even though you have your €25 down, you are out in the cold if you're late picking it up.

This is really píssing me off; I'm in the middle of changing jobs and the chances of being off on the 8th is slim as a result. The guy in Smyth's (Airside) told me that no one can just walk in on the day of launch and pick a Wii up; you have to have a pre-order. He also told me that I would receive a call the day before launch. Now if I say to them that I will absolutely be taking one of their hands but it won't be until around 6pm on the 8th they should hold it for me but it looks like they won't:mad: (going by what others have said on here). It's bullshít.

I think most stores operate on option B there, unfortunately!
I've had my Wii pre-order in soon as they started taking pre-orders, but I'm gonna be standin outside waiting for them to open on the 8th!

Shred maybe if you plead your case with them then they will either hold it for you or possibly even let you pick it up before they close on the 7th...?

I happen to not be in work OR college on the 8th, but if I was, I'd go into work/college late. No way Im NOT gonna be freezing my ass off outside smyths that morning :D

Shred can you pay off the full amount now? Then they'd have to hold it for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Thats a good idea, jebus....

I've said this before, but I believe that Smyths will have a midnight opening that night (they are open until 11pm anyway, so an extra hour and a half isn't too much of a stretch).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,521 ✭✭✭Shred

Yeah I keep meaning to drop in and ask them what my options are. I'll do this over the next couple of days and let you all know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Yeah, I was going to check in with my Smyths aswell to see if they're doing a midnight opening. Did anyone else happen to pre-order theirs in Smyths in Blanch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,521 ✭✭✭Shred

The only thing is I don't know if I'd feel too secure paying the full amount now, I mean I don't know if I could trust them. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to arrive there on the evening of the 8th and find that some numbskull has sold it:(

Blergh, a midnight pickup would add an extra €10 to the price for a taxi home >_< I think I'd prefer to get one in the morning, but I'll sure as hell be outside for the opening.

Well when I preordered my 360 in Smyths I was able to walk in two days after the launch and pick it up and I think there were far fewer 360's to go around than there will be Wii's.

I walked in about 5 minutes before closing on launch day and picked mine up. I'm pretty sure once you have a pre-order you are safe.

Well on the last few console launches that I've worked it's been preorders only on launch day unless we had additional stock.

Most stores, I imagine, would be careful enough not to promise someone a console they couldn't be 99% sure they'd get... that's why places like Game stopped taking PO's so early, not because they knew their stock levels, but because they couldn't be sure they'd get more than x amount (and so have only guarenteed what they know they'll get, even though they may well get more).

I'm pretty sure when I preordered that Smyths said they will hold it until something like 10am the next morning and if it wasn't picked up they would sell it on.

I'll still be queuing outside smyths be it before the midnight opening or freezing my ass of in the morning. Majora's mask just isn't me calm down. It's like taking calpol instead of metadon for a heroine addiction.

Is there definitely a midnight opening in Jervis St. Smyths?
    Anything confirmed yet?

If there is then whooop whooop!!!

Be in touch soon about the lift Retro and Rhyme.....

I'll definitely be there too for a midnight opening at Smyths on Jervis Street if it happens.

Although it will mean leaving the office Christmas party early.

Tell them you have to go for a Wii and quietly slip out :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭smokingman

Just rang them there and finally got through!
There'll be no midnight opening I'm afraid though :(

Normal hours opening and that's it - yer wan seemed a bit annoyed on the phone, maybe she's sick of answering that question....

has there ever been a midnight opening for a games console in ireland?

smokingman i wouldn't necessarly believe what they say at this point because its way to early to tell

There is no way in hell you will be sold it one minute before midnight btw especially with something of this size. The shop would be in so much trouble. So to the guy wanting it a little early I'm afraid you've no chance at all of getting them to give you it early. It's not the company's decision. There are fines for breaking curfews and you'll get annoyed industry people too which could damage your rep.

A staff member of smyths that posts on boards mentioned it's not entirely out of the question.

Then Smyth's really do want to lose out on any exclusives and want several thousand worth of fines. With something as publicised as this I would be so shocked if the official street date was broken.

Just called Smyths Jervis St. (the place I'd had my preorder since Oct. 1st) and the responses I got were that a) they don't know if there'll be a midnight launch yet but very probably not and b) that if you have a preorder already you will definitely have a Wii put aside for you.

That all suits me just fine. :)

Good stuff, put mine down there in mid-September so I should be fine too.

Dropped into Gamestop, Henry Street at lunch and the girl said they're doing a midnight opening for the Wii on the evening of the 7th. I asked if I needed to reserve any games/accessories and she said to call the start of launch week when they'll know more about stock levels.

Smyth's have been penalised before for this sort of thing too.

Was talking to my mate who used to work in Smyths. He said that they had a midnight opening for the PS2 but it wasn't confirmed until very late so hardly anyone turned up. So don't write them off yet.

That's good enough for me. I'll be at smyths at 10.45 on Thursday night the 7th to check it out.... If worse comes to worse, I'll be there for 8am on the 8th anyway.

I pre-booked mine on October 5th, so I should be ok *fingers crossed*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Don't think it matters really when you pre-booked, its a matter of first people that show up with a pre-booking AFAIK

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

At what point will they give up on pre-bookers and start handing them out to the general unwashed? Mine's pre-booked but if I turned up later that day would they just assume I hadn't wanted it and give it to some lower form of life that didn't reserve?

Smyths will hold it for a week if the other launches are anything to go by.

I preordered in Game in Iffy Valley and got the impression they will hold it for me for 48 hours or some such.

They said they will ring a week before and ask me what I want with it, bung it all in a bag the night before (Christmas!!) and then have it all totted up and ready to go at launch day.

No fuss and straight home to Zelda (the wicked wench).

I will find out more end of next week I think.

It is funny, but i feel Christmas is starting early for me this year. I am going to save a lot of games for Christmas Eve and the day itself. Spread out the Wii luv...

    Pablo
