I don't care about anything else, GSP won!

I had to believe that the good guy would win - woo!

Did it in style too. Would have finished it in the first if the bell had been 10 seconds later.

Pity about the low shots though. Gives Hughes something to make excuses about.

Was Vera impressive or is Mir just finished?

The less said about Sylvia/Monson, the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

    Mir was always overrated IMO.

Apparently Hughes said in a post-fight interview that the second "low blow" didn't hit him in the knackers at all, he dropped due to pain in his leg. Haven't seen that first hand though!

GSP's striking, takedown defense and conditioning is phenomenal... ...and that's before we even get started on his BJJ skills. The guy is a picture post card for MMA and fighter progression. Hughes was lucky that he didn't get knocked out in the first round. One minute into the second... ...justice was served. Fantastic fight! I lept of my seat screaming like a banshi and nearly burned my wife and kid with the coffee that was in my lap at the time..! Totally worth it! :D

i was lucky to escape a similar kick to the head from the missus. couldnt help getting carried away though. delighted for GSP. you gota love how humble he is.
did anyone else think john mccarthy gave hughes longer to recover than your usual fighter once he was knocked down in the 2nd round?

bring on chuck vs tito (any ideas what date it is?)

Obviosuly Im over the moon for GSP.

Next, JLB or Schilt to take Silvia's belt. Then the UFC would be really interesting.

GSP was right, hughes "cant 'andul my riddum" and he is one of the best ambassadors for this sport!

    Peace

That was an exceptionally skillful and stylish performance by GSP.

    Especially liking the superman punch.:D

Any thoughts on what happened with legionnaire?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Excellent. I didn't think it would be so convincing.

Hughes and Penn to face off for the right to get a title shot I say! Although to be fair, Hughes deserves a shot first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

it'll def be a rematch before penn gets another shot.

Next, JLB or Schilt to take Silvia's belt. Then the UFC would be really interesting.

Schilt is in amazing condition at the moment. You really don't register how imense they guy is and just how well conditioned until you stand next to him, have to bend your back to look up at him and think, "He's like some sort of bizarre cyborg experiment... ...with a heart of gold." He's far more skilled and conditioned than Silvia but I'm not sure that he'll ever really possess Silvias killer instinct.

That said, Schilt vs. Silvia is definitely a fight I'd like to see. Would be weird to have two Kyokushin backgrounded guys as the heavyweight and welterweight champs. More importantly, it would be great to have two "Mr. Nice Guys" holding the belts as ambassadors of MMA, instead of the "I'm gonna kill you sucka!" types. :D

    Schilt by monstorous knee rd.1.

Every time I see Schilt he gets better and better. 3 years ago he was robotic looking and seemed to only have two directions, forward and back. Now he's not just a big guy anymore. So hopefully the UFC will see sense and not just set up another Mir or Arlovski same old same old rematch and get him in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 757 ✭✭✭FiannaGym.com

I suppose behind the scenes the UFC wants to keep American Champs. But in fairness they have to loose Silvia, he's terrible.

I was watching the UFC last night with a middle aged couple, they only watched the Silvia V Monson fight and I found myself trying to explain away the poor standard. If they had watched GSP and Hughes I wouldn't have needed to, but having champs like that undermines the sport. Now i know people will say, "until he's beaten he should remain the champ" which is of course true and unfortunate because the UFC isn't a real world title (like it should be) its selective on the parts of the UFC money making machine. SO JLB and Schilt to the UFC.

Who else should be in the UCF? my thoughts would be:

    Schilt
    JLB
    Chris Brennan
    Allister Overream
Don Fry (another old dude for tito)
    Joakim Hansen
    ME

    Peace

Bring back Genki Sudo! Also JLB and when Vitor gets out of trouble, I'd like to see him back.

GSP is a gent and i was delighted to see him destroy that AS$HOLE! hughes....especially because i put 100 quid on him at 2/1 a month ago :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭ShaneT

SO JLB and Schilt to the UFC.
That would be nice! Not so sure about JLB though. Not sure he could survive if taken down. Schilt on the other hand is used to all three ranges, no issues (if allowed to unload elbow 'n knees).

JLB is a great fighter but Schilt is a fit, conditioned and getting smarter by the day all round fighter. The guy seems to have found that "place" in his head. Saw him in Holland about 8 weeks ago (ish) and you'd swear the guy couldn't be more relaxed. He's pretty much ready for anything at this stage.

I thought hughes was gonna win up until I saw the staredown -it was the complete reversal of the last staredown

Will brandon vera get the shot at silvia -if he does it will be a similar finish to the destruction of mir

Yup, Dana announced it at the post-fight press conference!

The Monson - Sylvia fight was a massive disappointment and all the more so because I thought the job was going to get done in round three but the rest was just miserable.
I was really happy for GSP and I thought he did an amazing job - straight to business and he wasn't cagey in the slightest.
Brandon Vera's great I hope he wins really impressively. What's Arlovski been doing since his last fight with Sylvia?

I have to say I was both delighted and surprised to see GSP win like he did. I believe I posted here that I just did not think he could take Hughes…I expected Hughes to come out, stay out of his range then go for some quick single legs and take GSP down.

Am I the only person who felt that Hughes fought like a foolish, arrogant chump? He was loving the fact that GSP was connecting, you could see him smiling about it, right up until the superman punch….that was Hughes' warning and he ignored it, calm out again like a fool and got put in his place for it!!

I truly have to hand it to GSP, I underestimated him completely, he fought like an utter pro and convincingly beat a man that, in all fairness, pretty much epitimises what being a success in the sport is.

I enjoyed every fight on the card except for the obvious ( am I alone in thinking that Joe Stevenson's eventual set up for the choke was beautiful? ) Sylvia Vs Monson. I look forward to seeing Vera take on Sylvia and hopefully win. I think Vera brings a dynamic style to his fights that has maybe been missing from the Heavyweight division for a little while now.

At this rate, Sylvia is going to be the most hated guy in the UFC (maybe he is already?).
He is a talented fighter; he showed this by evading 90% per cent of the take-downs attempted by Monson. Even when Monson had him down, Sylvia did a great job of defending himself.
The problem is that in his last two fights, he has come across as way too cold and calculating, and not driven enough. Against both Monson and Arlovski, after round three or so, he knew he was well in the lead and he had no interest at all in taking a risk in attempting to knock his opponent out. He was happy to put it in neutral and let the time tick down, along with his demoralised opponent, much to the chargrin of big John McCarthy.
If someone could light a fire under him and make him feel the need to destroy his opponenets, then he could be fantastic. I doubt Vera will bring that side of him out though, and I also doubt that he will take the ehavyweight crown of the Maniac (that being the single least appropriate name for him possible. He should trade nicknames with Chuck).

he's better as an underdog against someone better. he needs to step in with fedor.

Fedor would destroy him, I imagine. I guess what he needs is what you recommend; a few seconds of being destroyed to bring out the red mist. That would be something to see.

Yeah sticking him in with sem schilt would be entertaining.

Tim, for me, isn't a heavy weight thats going to bring the sport forward and to a wider audience....asshole fighters like him (if people want me to give evidence of his being an asshole I will but please check yourself first) give anti-fight campaigners fuel for their fire that is pretty hard to rebutt..bottom line..he's just an asshole but thankfully most fighters aren't...For this reason, I was glad that GSP beat Matt (I also think GSP is a better fighter...APE-MAN-GRACIE-HUGHES-GSP...it's a new day) because although I love Matt and admire him as a fighter and in many respects as a person his exclusive nationalism is dangerous. For this reason again I will be glad when Vera beats Sylvia, which I think he undoubtedly will, although I am scared that he is not so sure.
He's been talking alot lately about not caring about the belt, just the money, don't be that guy Vera....I'm afraid he might be one of these guys who needs to lose..as Pierre did. In fact, all fighters have to lose to be the best they can be, I don't think there is anyone in the heavyweight devision that is better than Vera (the Pitbull comes closest I think, 2 losses aside) but he could still lose to Sylvia if he doesn't have the right mentality. If he doesn't, a number of Pride fighters could beat him, one in particular who Sylvia refused to fight??? or Cro Cop. Vera needs to lose eventually, but I hope its not to Sylvia because 1. He's an ass and 2. There is no physical reson that Vera should lose to him.
So, get it together Vera. GSP, get rid of Serra, then beat Matt (They won't give Matt another fight first bicuse it would really have to be against Penn and 1. he will probably take to long to get back to full fighting fitness and 2. they will be too afraid that Penn will win and **** up their valuable rematch card. So if they give Hughes an in between fight, it will be against a nothing fighter and a cop out) again to show us just how good you are. Then will come Penn and maybe Diego, who are real threats but who won't beat Pierre, he's here for some time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Well I agree with you most of the way except that I think maybe BJ is the only fighter who's a real threat to GSP right now. I think if BJ puts his mind to it and gets his fitness right he could beat GSP, but the question is whether he'll do that.

What do you mean by Hughes's 'exclusive nationalism'?

Hi guys it was a decnt event but it highlighted a lot of flaws in the fighters...

This is just my opinion so if I pee on your fave fighter don't be miffed..

Donjonsosuke Misihima aka don johnson m-o-o-she-ma!!! really disappointed me I have seen him fight before and was shocked he left his head down....more than once....

Hate Joe [daddy? who gives these nicknames...dana white....you have some explianing to do my boy!!!] stevenson....just doesn't excite when he fights....

Allessio Sakara aka legionarias...has no upper cut....apart from that and some more conditioning[ you can put heart in here if you like...] should have won....

GSP well to be honest I hoped he would win but actually thought hughes would have done his homework, avoiding the footwork, closed the gap and gone for trademark powerful slam and then some GnP on GSP....

He didn't...shocked....and to be honest appauled by his attitude- smiling in a fight....eh no....smile after you win......

GSP was relaxed and flowed like water....seriously his rythem was smooth and that of a man whose not only has faith in his abilities but knows exactly how to use every attribute....pace, power, flexibility, the mind and controlled aggression....the super man punch demonstartes this perfectly....

Long reign of GSP.....I see ahead....thank you master yoda!!!

Hughes will have to suck it up and actually train to fight talented all rounders....to be honest if penn was fighting over his natural weight and was in condition I think he couldd have won last fight.....fitness....a real factor in fighting these days....

Mir and Vera.....Mir should lose the attitude as much as he has tried to lose the gut and maybe we might see something out of him again....

Vera has great potential I hope he applies it and applies it well....

Monsoon and Sylvia...waste of time this match...

Monsoon needs to lose weight...drop a division and then kick some butt....

Sylvia sucks not just as a fighter but personally I do have problems with his "nationalism"....waving a flag is nice and having a belt is nice but the two are not mutully exclusively and don't give him the right to bad mouth or offend those who don't share his miopic political viewpoint...anyway back to why he sucks as a fighter....
He is the most beatable champ the UFC have...
    He can't walk.....
    It's that simple...
Rent Ali with WIll Smith and watch smith do his george foreman mummy impersonation...I do the same for sylvia....
He has trouble actually walking to the ring...

Wana beat his sprawl....it's simple....kick the life out of his lead knee...not calf not tight...KNEE....
Sooner or later he will switch stance this would freak him out as the guy actually needs matt hughes to shout IN AND OUT at him so he doesn't forget to breathe....

No co-ordination on his weak side and the sprawl is rather hard on an injured leg....shoot....secure a leg pop out to the side and smack on a knee lock or punch the c-r-a-p out of the mummy....

All this is only useful if you are his size though.....

    Here endeth the rant.....

    Ciao

They should call him Tim "points" Sylvia. I know it's up to the challenger to be the aggressor and win the belt but all he did in that fight and the last arlovski fight was throw that jab, way too defensive always tryin not to get hit. And then he has the cheek to say he's gonna knock Vera out when everyone knows it'll be the same old defensive, jab jab, don't get hit ****e. Arlovski was ten times a better champ. You knew his fights were gonna end in brutal ko either way. If vera doesn'd ko sylvia, Arlovski will. I just hope Dana gives him another shot.

I absolutely agree that Penn is a real threat to GSP, he needs to get himself together so that he does himself justice for once. His whole attitude after the Hughes fight, one in which I do believe he was injured in, because nobody gases that quickly, was pretty scary in that he didn't seem like he wanted it enugh to come back strong. However fingers crossed he will sort stuff out, I want to see him next time with confidence, not arrogance, and also a six pack would be nice, he's been known to take fights lightly training wise, and it doesn't matter how good you are, you won't survive in the modern game at the highest level if you aren't willing to work your ass off. Ultimately, I still honestly believe that all things equal, GSP is the best 170 fighter around at the minute, definitely in the UFC.

What I meant by 'exclusive nationalism' is as follows; I don't mind people who are proud of where they come from, I certainly am, Ireland suits me, that's nationalism. However, I do have a problem with people who are proud of where they come from to the detriment of other countries, as in 'My countries better than yours' kind off thing. It's a much bigger issue than the UFC but I don't like it anywhere. As long as people have views like that we'l never have any peace. It depresses me. I think to much. It's actually touched on in the post event press conference which is available on UTube.

Hope, that answers your question in an incredibly long and roundabout way. Man I can waffle....
