I know there was a thread on this ages ago, and don't particularly want to start the debate up again, but thought it's worth mentioning that tomorrow (Monday 20th) is our last chance to submit an opinion to the working party. Questionnaire here (
    submission.doc
); there are only two student submissions so far.

It doesn't matter anyhow, hell we should infact have the Senior Lecturer minuted from the last SU council as stating clearly and unequivocally that he Has not read the submissions.

If that isn't a ****ing joke, I don't know what is.

Quite irresponsible of the Senior Lecturer I must say. Maybe he's just too busy.

Too busy to read 2 submissions??? :)

Maybe if more people put in submissions he would be bothered to read them.

Who wrote the two student submissions?

Submissions go through the working group. Though he chairs it, so he should read it. Summary: 1 in favour of semesterisation, 1 in favour of remaining how we are.

have our SU hacks on the board here not all sent in submissions? seems rather surprising.....

I imagine it's more of an executive summary presented at the working group. And only in my most optimistic moments do I feel that the submissions will make any difference, but I suppose a lack of submissions might be taken to mean that students don't care either way. (Which may be true for all I know).

It is an extremely dull and daunting submission form, but most people seem to skip lots of sections.

No idea who submitted the two that are up there: they're posted anonymously.

Or maybe hes waiting until the process is over and then read them all, staff and student subs.
    Have you put in one?

Yes actually, I have, and yourself? as tacitha stated, if we dont submit it makes it easier for them to say "meh, students don't care" and so I submitted one. I've also sat in on as many public meetings as I can and questioned Kearney a number of times.

    How bout you?

When is the earliest time semesterisation would be introduced? 2008/9? Or 2010/11

Kearney mentioned how if it'll be agreed this year '06/'07 that it'll take 5 or 6 years to implement.

soe in other words, none of us are likely to be in the college?

Since you'll be gone in 3 or 4 years - probably not. Though anyone in first year or second year who wish to do a postgrad could easily be affected.

i won't be around college when this rolls out but I'm still very interested in trying to find out what the story is. I'm still very confused.

They're... talking about it? and... doing it slowly? awh... you guys get all the working stuff :'( *hops on a 10 to ucd, joyfully awaiting the chaos and confusion and flames*

*edit; might drop by the pav later to drown my sorrows*

Surely the whole point of implementing it so far into the future is to try to stop people (both faculty and students) from really sitting up and taking notice, as it won't happen any time soon? It's not as though they couldn't implement it much sooner if they wanted to - they managed to bring in restructuring and ARAM fairly swiftly..

Would it really affect a research postgrad that much? They're more like minimum wage staff no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

i don't know how it'd really effect any research ones, since you'll likely be on a fixed salary determined by your grant.... though alas internal red tape/politics of the college do delay everything in tcd, so i guess that changing will have an impact(though i imagine the change from the school's setup to 3/4 super faculties will have a far larger impact on the pg's)

Well, I've heard the senior lecturer say it could be next year, it could be five year's time, it could be ten year's time. Given that he believes in the value of constant change, I suspect sooner rather than later. Staff in my school are certainly talking as if it'll start next year (which isn't to say they know).

If you're a teaching postgraduate, you'll be affected, given that the shape of term-time and perhaps the attainment levels of your students
will change. Could lead to more exams, which might not good news for postgrads either.

Its all bizarre - will wait til after a meeting with the school on monday to comment. apparently kearney is coming along so i figure i'll give the paper a read and see.

I managed to get mine completed and submitted although I was glad that I got the extension from Kearney at Council the previous week.

After having completed the submission I can see why so few were sent in. The questions were spread over so many pages it felt like the template would never end. It two hours for me to contemplate the questions and comment on the 30 or 40 answers it was looking for.

Incidently Crash you do realise that your submission is published with your name, email address and phone number on the first page? I thought they were making them anonymous!

Only if you clicked the box...

I knew I forgot to tick something. that submission drove me mad, the questions were higly ambigious, bleh.

Will be interesting to count up how many submissions were in favour of any change, or ag'in it. I couldn't be bothered opening up that many .pdfs right now.

Some staff submissions just ignored the first 12 pages :p

sad to say i looked at most.... seems fairly evenly split. most of the antis are very short and 'im agin it' type, with few exceptions. Most of the pro are a little more thoughtful or at least talkful.

leaving this year anyhow so no mind

Charlie Larkin's submission even had poetry included...
Oh and check out Sean Barretts submission... He refuses to answer questions based on the fact they were being asked in the first place

Someone should try that in his exams this year.
