A friend of mine is looking at getting a notebook pretty soon as part
of a sideline he does in drawing up gardens/landscaping.
Since he is on the road he would like to have the facility to charge
his laptop battery using the car 12V supply.

He saw the Aldi Medion Notebook offer (tomorrow)
    I've steered him towards Dell
    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=ieepp1&l=en&oc=N11155&rbc=N11155&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsinspn_1501_3

That model is the Inspiron 1501
I've seen on the Dell site a car charging kit from Kensington which is
certified to run with a bunch of Inspirons and other notebook models.
I will check this with Dell (since I imagine the Inspiron 1501 is such
a new product line that it probably hasn't yet been certified with
    various power accessories).

Does anyone know broadly what determines compatibility of these
car chargers and the models supported (or not) ?

No idea how much the Dell charger kit would be but knowing their prices on most other accessories you would be better off telling your mate to get one of these..

Would be handy to have for other things too. He could power some of his tools or such like off of it as well should the need arise.

I have a universal one from work, there's a selector switch om it to choose the voltage so just match the voltage to your laptop and the end that plugs into the laptop is interchangeable. I know they cost around €90 in pc world but i'm sure they would be cheaper somewhere like maplins

Thanks for the info on the Maplins inverter. Sounds good.

I know there's a thread on this already but what do you think about
Dell AMD machine, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, 15" screen versus
Aldi (Medion). 880Euro for the Dell, 760 for the Aldi machine.
I advised my friend to get the Dell since at least with Dell you
can be more sure about replacement parts, etc into the future.
I figured 100Euro difference or so isn't so great unless he is
    penny pinching.

I'm sure the Aldi machine (advertised this weekend) is a nice
machine but if I were in his shoes I'd probably go for the Dell.
