    Optical or ball?

It could be dust if it is an optical mouse?

    As Diver said.

Clean the surace its on and then clean carefully the mouse itself.

Its not a laptop you are using is it?

Aye it could be the surface the mouse is on, the optical ones don't like shiny/reflective surfaces.

This is a problem with a lot of first gen optical mouse's. If its new then disregard.

Optical mice are troublesome. They tend to do that: just shoot off to corners and stop responding for little or no reason. Would reccommend chainging the mouse to an old fashioned roller ball, or upgrading to a laser mouse such as this: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=325145

Check your mouse pad. They gave us these new mouse pads in work that had half of the surface in one colour, and half in another. Every time the (optical) mouse passed over the dividing line the cursor flicked to the top corner of the screen.

Needless to say, we ditched them and went back to the old ones.

Sounds like its optical. I have the same problem the odd time. Pissed me off a load of times playing games online.

I get that problem - not frequently, just the odd time when playing games the mouse points upwards and starts spinning untill pull it down. Bit annoying when you're charging into battle alright but thankfully it's rare enough.

Was told it was cheap optical mouse issue but has happened with gaming orientated mice also.

I had this trouble with a shiney plastic mouse mat. Switched to cloth, problem ended.

Any time my mobile 'phone is on my desk and rings, my (optical) mouse tends to go crazy:
cursor jumping all over the screen, text scrolling by itself etc.
It also happens when the 'phone does that polling thing which you can hear if you leave it near speakers.

Have you considered RF inteference from your mobile as a cause?
