Films that most accurately portray America.

Every year we as Irish/Europeans watch hundreds of American made films that bear very little resembalance to their country of their origin.

I was wondering if there are any films out there that accurately portray this country and its people (of which we absorb so much media from - be it music/film/tv).

For me (and this is gonna sound weird) but I'm watching Home Alone now and I found that my experiences of America was very much like this film (not the annoying Macrawly brat, the wacky criminals and endless slew of robbery attempts - but moreso the general vibe of the movie and in particular the 'family' characters in it).

So which films have you found best represent your experiences of your time spent in the good ol' US and A?

I thought About Schmidt was a pretty accurate portrayal of what certain americans are like. Payne has a good eye for capturing ordinary people in his films.

Damn and blast! Okay how about Texas Chainsaw Massacre?! There could be no film that sums up the totality of such a huge and diverse nation.

Thats too many references to 'Office Space' than i can take, what with that other thread last night... im totally watching it later (after Jurassic Park III and Return of the King).

But yeh, 'Bowling for Columbine' catches some aspects of America pretty well.

well, America is pretty much divided, you have you East coast, where a lot of normal people live, you got your west coast with the glitz and glam, then you have middle America, who are responsible for bush.

No film will portray all 3.

The Straight Story does a good job of portraying one small part of America. I can't think of any film that has managed to pull in the sum total of a country as large the United States.

What about Nashville ?- and fitting on the day that Robert Altman has passed away.

Surely no other film has captured the shallowness of the American dream so brialliantly
