Sky Retailer Rip-off!

In one of my rental properties I am having Sky installed as a bonus for the tenants. However it is wired for a phoneline but I have not had it actually turned on nor do I intend to either as the tenants don't want it. I have subscribed for Sky World for the first three months and will cut it down to €30.50 a month then.

I have got it through an independent retailer and got the Sky Card in the post yesterday. I know all about it but my independent retailer wants €70 to install the System without a phoneline.

However this has put me thinking that I am about to be ripped off. My retailer told me I am under no obligation and can just dump the card if I decide not to go ahead with it. But €70 seems a bit steep. I wonder if my retailer will not do it cheaper can I keep the card and organise for a different retailer to install it and I pay them the cheaper rate (if they are cheaper).

I tried searching but could not find all the answers needed!

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

You pay €37.50 EXTRA on install price to not have a phoneline, i.e. on top of what ever the install charge is any particular week.

Install unsubsidized by Sky can easily be €200 for equipment and €100 to €200 for install depending on difficulty of job.

The offer is free install when signing up for 12months but my independent retailer says he has to charge €70 because their is no active phone line in the premises.

As watty said, the No Phone Line levy is €37.50 payable to the retailer. He may be charging extra if he considers your job will take more time than the "standard install" allows for. Though he should have made himself clearer on this.

If you go to another Sky agent, you'll have to sign up a new contract. This is because the card you have now is currently tied with the original retailer (ASA) and the contract has his ASA number on it.

Hello netwhizkid, what retailer is it?

Just wondering as I work for one in Kerry myself!

PM me if you don't want to broadcast it.

    Cheers,

The 37.50 charge is really for people who intend having a phone installed within a few months. Bear in mind the retailer is taking a chance of not being paid at all by sky for the equipment or the install in your case. I think you should be careful using the term "rip off" without knowing the full facts.

You own everything from Day 1, so 70Euro is not bad for 250 Euro of gear and 150 Euro of install.

Dish, LNB, cable, connectors, Receiver, SCART, install time, travel time

    Thanks for the reply,

Cool! But if say the Digibox packed up in 6 months time would the repair of it be mine or Sky's responsibility? I think they give 1 years guarantee on new install or would I lose this by not having a phone line??

it would be the retailers responsibility and usually the wholesaler will swap the digibox for a working model.

You get a 1 year G'tee BECAUSE you own it. With cable TV / MMDS they own the box so there is no time limit on replacement.. but then you have no choice at all and no HD and no PVR etc...
