I've recently started a new job where my role is selling Database Related Technology. I used to work on the hardware sales side of things and my technical knowledge was an advantage to me, but now I am on the software side and my knowledge of software and databases in nowhere near where I would like it to be. In my job there are quite a lot of resorces to learn from but they are quote specific, detailed and technical. What I could perfer is a basic consise executive summary of sorts. Obviously I do have plenty of technical people who i can call upon when dealing with clients etc but I feel myself that i want to improve my general knowlegde of databases and overall technology to be more confident in my job when talking to customers.

I mainly work with Oracle (Database Technology and Middleware) but I suppose its nice to know what else is out there too: IBM, SAP, BEA etc. I was wondering can anyone point me in thr right direction of some books or websites that can help me. Someone recommended The Future of Technology by Tom Standage but I hear this is a little out of date now.I don't need to know how to design a database, but it would be helpfull to read about how databases are generally used in conjunction with other apps - and generally the sort of thing that IT managers do, the challenges they have, as if I have a better understanding of this, I can help position solutions to help them.

    Thnaks

I'd reccomend you read your company's/developer's whitepapers on your product (or alternatively Oracle's on 10g Database/App.Server/SOA) .. then ask the developers any further questions you have... these should explain where their product fits in.

    Alternatively: http://www.service-architecture.com/

Thanks, yes there are loads fo whitepapers but man then are pretty huge and detailed and often assume you know a lot already and they get very detailed.

OP - try googling around for some third party evaluation reports such as those from Ovum and the Gartner group.

I find the two UK publications "Computing" and "Computer Weekly" to be great resources on what's happening in the industry. I'm sure you can get online versions these days.

Avoid Irish IT rags - they're basically spineless and such re-write press-releases.
