not much of a tecky so would app if someone could tell me is it possible to have two broadband connections i.e say ntl which i have and digiweb and be able to switch between the two. my ntl has been sihte over the last few weeks and as i multi stts its proving quite expensive. My intentions are to move to 6tables or even 8 over the next few months so a second back up connection is essential i think

I would imagine that this is possible though I can't imagine why you would want a second connection. Surely finding one stable connection should be your priority? There should be no problem in receiving 2 different broadband connections via 2 different methods e.g. one via cable or phone line and the other via digiweb wireless.

I have lost my connection to ntl on 4 occasions over the last three weeks costing me £120 + rake each time. I have found them excellent up to now but for some reason its sihte ATM. my intentions are to play more tables so connection loss is gonna cost me more in the future so i just figured a back up connection will pay for itself even if i only have to use it twice in a year.

You should have a search through the broadband forum, under tech -> nets&comms dropdown at the top of the page. I think there's a thread about NTL being crap (not ntlbell this time :))

They could also answer your Qs about having 2 broadband connections, but I think you should be fine just with one. Where are you located and what are your DSL options?

DSL is through the phone line i think. I'm suprised though, never had any troubles with NTL

The question is whether or not it will actually work.

For surfing; sure it will work. But when using client software as it is the case with poker I'm not sure. Don't they work based on the IP address? The IP address would be different for each of the two connections. Can anyone verify/deny this?

I concur with one of the earlier posters who recommend finding out the issue you have with your connection at the moment. NTL, in the past few months since being bought out has deteriorated somewhat regarding speed and reliability but I had since heard that things have improved. Call them for some support.
In regards your actual question.....and the technicalities of it...
It is possible to have two connections by two means (NTL,Phoneline,Wireless) and to use one as a "backup" however you will still have the same issue you are having now when one goes down. You will not be able to "fall over" to the working connection and continue your game-it will take a while to do this and more importantly your outside IP address will change, possibly causing security issues with the poker software. Even if this were not a problem you would need to purchase more networking hardware and configure it properly do that if one connection goes down your internet hardware will use the other....
Its not as straightforward as you may have first thought.

DSL broadband just means the most common bb through the phoneline, provided by Eircom and ESAT BT and others.

Doesn't the Waterford area have some really fast and hi-tech internet options?
Someone on the Broadband forum or Wireless forum might be able to help you more. Or get to using google for waterford and bb.
