A friend of mine got Sky digital installed a couple of months ago and at the time the engineer said that the telephone line was faulty (dont know how he discovered this) and advised my friend that he should get on to Eircom as it may lead to problems.

He's still waiting for Eircom but every few days the Sky signal disappears and then comes back a couple of hours later. Does this sound as if it has something to do with a dodgy telephone line?

My mate seems to think that the problem only occurs when its a bit windy but as the dish is on the sheltered side of the house I cant really see this being a problem and his wife seems to think that it goes on the blink no matter what type of weather there is.

Anyone got any ideas as what the problem could be and can he sort it.

I fired of a couple of emails on his behalf to Sky over the last 3 weeks but they haven't responded

na they only use the phone line to set up the receiver...
once that's done you don't need it plugged in any more...unless you want to book something or play games on sky.

my phone line has been plugged out for 3 years now.

    Nothing to do with phone.

Perhaps a tree is nearby? It sounds a bad installation. poor alignment or tree close by

    Thanks for the replies lads.

I thought myself that the telephone connection wouldnt be an issue. There would be a couple of fir trees across the road but the dish is facing away from these. I have bigger trees in front of my house and they are directly opposite the dish and I dont have a problem.

(If byte sees this he will know where the house is - last house in the row as you go up the Millbrae in Stranorlar)

    Sounds like bad installation.

I have sent 3 emails off to Sky about this but apart from them saying that they will be in touch nothing else has happened.

Does anyone know what the procedure is in a case like this. Can he get Sky to get the installer back again?

Hi Muffler, in a word, yes, the subscription and installation is presumably only a few months old, therefore its not working fully and should be resolved by Sky. I'd advise that he gets another installer to come back though, any installer that suggests that the telephone line will cause problems with his Sky is not an installer i'd trust (sorry!)

    Couldn't agree more.

What he feels aggrieved about now is that he is paying for something he can only watch part of the time and Sky aren't doing anything about it. If he gets another installer its going to cost him money also.

Im just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and how they got the matter resolved.

Just a wee update on this. Sky phoned him this evening and are arranging for an engineer to call next Wednesday.

    We shall see what happens

From what i read, the installer said no such thing. What he said was that the phone line was faulty - which could well be possible, as the reciever obviously couldn't dial out during setup. A reasonable assumption, i would think.

I cant really answer or reply to that as I wasnt there myself. The installer advised my mate during the installation that the phone line was faulty in some way or other. He told him to get it seen to as it could cause him some bother in the future.

I dont know if the installer meant bother with Sky or just bother with the normal day to day use of the phone but when my mate was explaining the problem to me a few weeks ago he brought this up and he certainly seems to think that the installer was referring to the Sky scenario.

Just an update on this. The engineer called to my mates house during the week and apparently the problem was the LNB ???. (my mate said it was a wee thing at the dish - thats how much he knows about it)

The guy told him that there was a batch of about 120 that were faulty and that they were replacing them. No problems since thankfully.

Thanks for all the advice lads and I am off now to look for some more in another thread.
