Have a pc belonging to a mate which on and off i have been fixing for about 8 months and still cant fix the damn thing.

    1800Xp 1gb ram Kt 400 board.

    The problem:

No sound.... The onboard AC 97 is found by windows (have tried Home Pro MCE) but never any sound out of speakers (have tried loads of others).
I replaced the board with another kt 400 put on new windows still same problem, i disabled onboard and bought CMI 8733 (exact same one as the one my pc) soundcard still same problem with fresh install of windows and CMI drivers.

I have tried Via drivers, windows drivers, realtek drivers, CMI drivers...no matter what sound will come out of this damn pc. I have enabled and disabled onboard checked PCI slots , various speakers.

Nothing will make sound come from this pc :(

Right now its sitting beside me soundless, and im just about to give up and sell him a laptop....

    Thats really unusual!!
Have you tried using headphones in case speakers are bad?
have you put volume up on the sound on the taskbar fully?
does the m/board have 6.1/7.1 and maybe your using incorrect jacks?
any exclamation marks in device anager?
does it play from cd/dvd with the cable in from back of drive to sound card?
    have you tried updating drivers?
is the mute button ticked under volume in taskbar?

I had a similar problem with an old family rig. XP2500 with on board sound.
It did work when we got the rig originally but after about a week or 2 it went. I dont remember the Mobo

Anyhoo, I went through everything drivers, speakers, device manager etc...

My dad brought it back to the guy who built it.
He had already installed some backup image on the pc so he ended up re-imaging it - but he did say that a program called Bullguard was screwing things up.

I think it was a firewall of sorts but I dunno if that was the real reason behind the failure.

Anyhoo all I can suggest is a system restore or re-image / re-install and pray.

    G'luck

Has the windows audio service started .. or if it hasnt check the event log to see what happened

Have you checked that the default audio device is your onboard AC 97 ?

Sometimes when you plug a usb device, (a skype phone for example) in this changes to the phone and can leave the system without sound until you change it back.

Start/ Control Panel/ Sound and Audio Devices Properties/ Audio Tab then check the top Drop down menu that AC 97 is your default.

Also make sure that to check only use preferred devices

Could be an IRQ conflict within Windows? Try using msinfo32 to see if this is the case. I had a similar issue where the BIOS hadn't disabled the onboard sound and as a result wouldn't allow the new sound card to take presedence. Could be something to check; if you haven't done so already...

    But otherwise Im perplexed!

Stuck Vista on it , neither onboard or card work.

Sound card works in other pcs with the exact same Nlite XP right from install.

I honestly have no ****ing clue whats wrong here.

To recap we I have an onboard sound card and PCI sound card that do not work in one pc, but the PCI works in another. XP and Vista both see both cards and install them and say its working fine.

I have speakers headphones that work plugged in not working when in either.

Commander Vimes may be onto to something.
