Thinking of getting a small amp for messing about with while I'm up in Dubland. Marshall a bit big to be lugging up and down!
    Thinking MicroCube.

Thing is, small valve amps like that little Epiphone somebody mentioned before or the Orange Crush have me confusticated. Wuold they be any good, relatively speaking of course.

Also don't want to go mad financially as I only have one year do do up here.

There is no other answer than the microcube :p The problem with the little tube amps is that they have to be cranked to get a nice overdrive. 5W is far too much for bedroom levels. 0.5W would be better.

I think for portability, you just cannot beat the Microcube, seeing as it can run on batteries. I've also heard good things about the Vox DA5, but haven't used one.

The Valve junior (Little Epiphone one) only has a volume knob, no other controls at all, so you'd probably need some additional pedals to get some good sounds from it, depending on what you want to play. So price and portability wise, I'd say the Microcube or Vox is the best choice.

Cheers. Microcube seems to be winning. Tried one before. Might go in to town and try out some of the competition if they have them in the shops. Pain in the ass that there only ever seems to be mahooosive amps in stock.

    I got a microcube a couple of weeks ago, and Yes. Just . . . . Yes.

Depends what you want. A valve amp will respond to your playing in a way a microcube never could. But as has been said before, even a 5watt valve amp is seriously loud. There are a few smaller ones, like the zvex nano, or matamp minimat, but even they will be pretty loud believe it or not. Also, they will be pretty limited tonally compared to the microcube.

The microcube is probably your best bet. I have a low wattage valve amp (univalve), and a microcube. Although the Univalve sounds about a hundred times better, i use the microcube more at home, it sounds sh*t but is great for noodling around.

Decided, for the time being anyway to forget about a small amp altogether. Gonna do without amplification up in Dublin, as painful and all as that sounds, and save up for an all-valve doozy instead. Thinkin Fender DeVille.

Yeah Devilles are huge. Go for the Deluxe, they're plenty plenty loud, I don't think I've ever turned it up louder than 4 on a gig.
