KFC targets extraterrestrials with huge logo

From space, extraterrestrials and astronauts can look back to earth and see The Great Wall of China -- and KFC's Colonel Sanders.

The KFC Corp. on Tuesday launched a rebranding campaign with an 87,500 square-foot image of Colonel Sanders in the Nevada desert which the company says makes Kentucky Fried Chicken the world's first brand visible from space.

"If there are extraterrestrials in outer space, KFC wants to become their restaurant of choice," KFC President Gregg Dedrick said in a statement.

The logo consists of 65,000 one-foot by one-foot painted tile pieces that were assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

"If we hear back from a life form in space today - whether NASA astronauts or a signal from some life form on Mars - we'll send up some Original Recipe Chicken," said Dedrick.

The logo also depicts an updated version of KFC icon Colonel Sanders who wears his signature string tie but with a red apron instead of his classic white double-breasted suit.

The logo was built at the remote Area 51 desert near Rachel, Nevada, which KFC said was known as the UFO capital of the world and famous for its association with UFO conspiracy theories.

maybe ET and the likes would like to try the Colonels new tasty sauce!

Didn't maxim make a huge cover of one of their magazines in the same desert?Or was it FHM?

Either way, just another marketing ploy. Just hope the desert doesn't become scattered with these tacky signs.

That's just ridiculous... Who the hell is going to see that apart from astronauts who have to live on those vacuum packed mini meals, that'll drive them mad..

Its not visible from space though. You can only see it from space if you had a good telescope.

TBH Target + Ophra got thier first.

From watching the video of its construction and the clips taken from a satellite, you seem to be right.

You realise that the real Colonel Sanders is long since dead (as is KFC's chicken)? Oh, they have an actor/imposter that poses today for sales purposes.

I would hope that remote areas in the desert are not trashed any more by corporations looking for marketing ploys. The States already has far too many billboards trashing their roadways. Why do I think that this "remote" area in the desert might be seen by airlines passing over?

Thats a shame...at least Mr Pringle is still around! :D

Yeah, it'd be shame if it got overran with these tacky signs. Unfortunately, I can see more of this crap popping up in the future.

You're probably right about that actually, it could well be in a main air traffic lane.

You can't see the Great Wall of China from space either what with it not being very wide and being pretty much the same colour as everything around it... it's a pretty common misconception.

Yea, I never really fully understood the whole "seeing it from space" thing. Technically anything is visible from space.

I think that it's visible from space (like everything) but not from the moon, which was the original myth.

It's more a case of you having to be in space to have all of it in your field of vision at the same time.

It's going to be difficult to make an 87,500 sq ft image using 65,000 1sq ft tiles isn't it?:p

What if a race of super-intelligent alien space chickens spot the sign? We're banjaxed then.

If you look out of the window of a space ship you simply aren't going to see it. Many have tried over the years.

The spaces won't make a difference, not with the colour and whatnot.

Look up Rasterbation on Wikipedia for some examples of what you can do with dots! :)

What a waste of money though!
