Tsunami to Hit Japan After 8.1-Magnitude Earthquake, AP Says

    By Nick Allen

Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- A tsunami is expected to hit northern and eastern Japan after a magnitude-8.1 earthquake hit islands north of the country, the Associated Press reported, citing Japan's meteorological agency.

The tsunami will be at least 6.5 feet (2 meters) high and residents were told to flee, AP said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.7 and struck near Russia's Kuril Islands. The agency said the quake may generate a local tsunami. No tsunami warning was needed for the U.S. and Canada, the agency said.

Hate that! How fooked would we be if a Tsunami was to hit?? Down to Athlone ASAP methinks ;)

I wouldn't be worried if it was only gonna be a 2 meter high wave... Unless my house was on the beach...

Easy to say when you are nowhere near it.

I was about to say that for a tsunami its quite small...but then compared to the Japanese...well...they're screwed! I'm sure there won't be too much damage providing they evacuate those living by the coast in time though. Hopefully not anyway.

If a tsunami that size was going to hit Ireland, I wouldn't be too concerned as my house isn't that close to the coast and we're quite high up in comparison to the sea level.
If a massive one was going to hit I'd probably just go up to the top of the Dublin/Wicklow mountains, its fairly high up and a good distance from the coast so I reckon it'd be safe there. May be wrong though.

It's a tsunami not a wave. The water would keep rushing in and in. It's feck up some coastal areas. I think I might be safe-ish. I'm on the coast in Dublin, but blocked by bull island, so that might help (I pity the wildlife though! :D)

Think it already hit and was a lot smaller than expected.

The size of the wave is much less important than the speed its travelling at. The last tsunami reported to have hit Japan was 18 inches iirc.

There's no need for these flippin' early warning systems.
The Japanese authorities have been crowded around computers getting the latest from boards.ie.

8.1 magnitude seems incredible. I wonder if AP got it wrong? Oh, in So Cal and now face the big pond between here and Japan. Maybe I should get my board and wet suit vest out and look for the big one? Surf's Up!

Just in case someone like this* was to fall into the sea off the west coast of the UK. It pays to be prepared!

    Stop, Drop & Roll ftw!**

*Will remove link if someone is offended.
**May/may not actually help in the case of a Tsunami hitting.

9.1 on the R-scale? No way! The magnitudes go up geometrically not linear! That would be equivalent to the meteor impact in the American Gulf 65 million years ago that was hypothesized to have led to the extinction of the dinosaur.

Do you have a credible source (scholarly citation) for a 9.1 on the R-scale?

I'd be more worried that a quake of that magnitude could indicate that the plates are shifting. Tokyo is well over due for a serious Earthquake.

Oh and the Indian Ocean quake in 2004 was between 9.1 and 9.3.

Yes, I was in error. Thanks for clarifying this. Citation

Apologies also to sdon_1. I guess I learned something from you guys. Thanks.

how high was the indian ocean earthquake?

    isn't more about water displacement

there were expecting a two metre one initially they high tech equipment must be that high tech if turned out to be only a couple of inches

I think we're due to get hit when the canaries fall in to the sea.

    La Palma Megatsunami

I thought that the east coast of america was going to be the one who gets hammered when that happens.

i was just thinking there - this is an easy way to attack a country.

what would be the effects of a few atomic bomb explosions on the antlantic sea bed? Would it cause a tsunami or a 4 inch wave by the time it reaches the coastline?

it would be a great, easy way to wipe out a coastline, too easy if it is possible.

According to the Times it was 16 inches...either way, typical press hype!

Had the St. Stepehen's day tsunami never happened this would never have gotten a mention, total sensationalist and lazy journalism :(

correct there is a volcanic island with the next eruption due any day now but realistically im guessing no more then 20 years, it will create the 2nd largest wave ever recorded.

A tsunami caused by land falling into the water is MUCH MUCH bigger than any wave caused by a earth quake or a below sea level volcanic eruption

The wave will go several miles in land and wipe out the entire east cost, kinda defeats the purpose of building that WTC memorial building thing.

Its kinda funny that people are not that concerned, also i have to say its very funny that no nation or terrorist group has tried to force the wave to happen earlier.

You see the island in question has 2 volcanoes on it , 1 dormant and 1 active with a eruption due. The island has a large "crack" going through its center when the next eruption takes place almost 1/3 of the island will fall into the ocean creating the massive wave. Why does some nation not just plant many explosives along the crack and then donate them causing millions of American deaths, massive destruction and also cripple the whole world economy because of massive losses of major American buisnesss

Your post has just been picked up by a CIA anti-terrorist web trawl. Your background is being checked and you are on a list for visa refusal if you ever want to go west!!!
However, Hollywood studios are also looking for more of your ideas to turn into a blockbuster movie! :D

I am not sure it's guaranteed to happen within 20 years, I believe it's 1 of those things that could happen tomorrow or in few hundred years although it will happen.

Would someone mind ringing me a week or two before this happens? I'd like to see NY and Boston before it gets all wet. If its not too much trouble like :o

I remember seeing a video about Tsunami waves in 5th year Geography. They had a prediction simulation for what'd happen if that Island in the Canaries was to fall to bits.. I think I'll start stickin me money into Umbrella Manufacturer's stock soon

Discovery or National Geo had a prog on this a while back called called Super Tsunami or something like that.

    From NationalGeographic.com:

There's also the possibility that the eruption of an obscure volcano in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa could send giant tsunami waves surging ashore from New York to Florida, as well as southern Britain.

A slab of rock about 35 miles (56 kilometers) long on the western slope of the volcano Cumbre Vieja is cracking. Scientists think an eruption could shear the slab away from the mountain, drop it into the sea, and send gigantic waves rolling across the Atlantic Ocean. About nine hours later, these waves—some of them 80 feet (24 meters) high—could strike the U.S. East Coast.

50cm doesn't sound too serious I know, but tsunami waves are different to your normal waves you'd see coming in and out down at Salthill.

They just keep coming one after another with little receeding, if at all. 50cm is still enough to cause serious flooding but, of course, not the massive loss of life that was witnessed 2 years ago in the 'Big One'.

don't forget the yanks tend to focus on themselves most, if the tsunami wiped out africa and new youk guess which one would be the head line , also they will get it worse than we will, but the splashback will head our way too.
