Component Cables at launch?

    Hey all,

I just thawed myself out from the freezer to quickly ask this question, before I promptly return to my cryogenic slumber (c'mon Dec 8th!).

Does anyone know the status for Component cables for 480p HDTV output on the Irish launch date? Will they be available in Game, Gamestop, etc?

Also, does anyone know if any of the shops selling the Wii are doing midnight launches?

My Philips LCD HD TV doesnt appear to have component inputs on it, its had a DVI connection, composite connection and two scart connection is there any way of utilising the component connection on the Wii hrough my TV? It's really annoying me :(

Did the TV have a "HD Ready" sticker on it when you bought it? If it did it must have a component input. Otherwise you'll have to get the RGB Scart cable but it won't be as good.

I have a HD Ready Philips 32PF5320/10. I did a bit of searching and think I will have to do the following to get it working. Connections all over the shop!

I have a similar yet different problem, need component cables that slot on my tv is currently occupied by the 360, now I reckon the HD-DVD drive will come with a fix to allow you to plug the 360 into the TV via the new drive into the HDMI port, then the component sockets will be freed up, but don't know yet, I'll otherwise have to take a trip to maplins and make my own adaptor to plaug them in at the same time.

I thought the 360 hddvd drive connects straight to the xbox via usb?

Hi will it make a huge difference running the wii through with the componant cable when it wont do hi-def? I'll be using mine on a 32" LCD...HD ready

Would it be like the step up which I remember from plugging my PS1 in with a scart lead for the first time!? 'cause if it is its worth the small outlay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭Sonderval

From all reports I've read, if your TV has component inputs, it is well worth the outlay in order to use the Wii at its 480p setting.

I know that when I upgraded from my PS2 composite cables to component cables, it made a noticeable and welcome difference. The XBox has spoiled me with HD graphics, so I really want to play Zelda in 480p.

Why not just make your own?

Check out this neat little hack-me-doodle.

Well, I say neat but (click--->)

Component cables will allow the Wii to output in 480p, otherwise you'll be stuck with 480i, which does an alternate line on each pass, causes blurring and colour bleeding...

Here is a link with the difference:

Quickie -- seems Wii component cables are Nintendo's eBay scam-thing now, fetching 4-5x list price (saw this on Kotaku, not bothering to link)

    Good one, Nintendo.

I just know the composite cable(and the scart cable, to a lesser extent) are gonna look mighty rubbish on my HDTV.

no no , thats vga you need DVI , i have a philips 42' plasma HD with a DVI and use one of theese. ebay is the best for them

Here's some decent composite/component cable comparisson shots for those of you wondering if it will be worth shelling out for the component cable. You'll notice there's a clear improvement in sharpness and clarity:

    http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162297/p-2.html

As it says on the article "Mouse over the default composite cable image to see the component cable version".

The connection on the back of the wii wouldn't change in different regions, and the other end. the component bit, looks the same as a euro one as far as I can tell.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 632 ✭✭✭Tank Top Fever!

the connection looks exactly the same as the euro one

I doubt they'd have different cables for differnt regions

Having the component means I wont have to keep fiddling around at the back of the telly

I'll have the xbox coming in via VGA, so it's happy daze

Anybody order from play-asia? My order was supposed to ship on the 4th but is still at the "preparing" stage...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 632 ✭✭✭Tank Top Fever!

    Mine hasn't shipped either

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭scrapland

Play asia dont have them in stock.

Preparing order on status page means feck all. My TH Project 8 has been on preparing order for 3 weeks

Typical of nintendo though, they really dont give a **** about European gamers, no trauma center, no excite truck, no elebits, no component cables

    Just a quick FYI.

When the chap from Game phoned about my pre-order, I asked if they would have Component cables available. They said they would - unless they somehow misunderstood what I was asking for.

Either way, I'll be getting the Wii later so I'll post back and let you know the outcome.

Can you cancel an order at this stage? I don't see any option to, but I've emailed them about it anyway. The only reason I ordered from play asia is that they made it look like they had the stock to meet my request.

Hate to burst anybodies bubble here, but 480p ain't HD, its standard tv definition / res. Infact it slightly lower that our PAL tv signal as it is based o the NTSC setup. However as it is progressive scan you will get a much better image than reguler TV.

If you run it at 60Hz you get 'enhanced' definition TV (EDTV) which I presume everyone will be doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

Um, well yes I have an xbox 360 so I know the difference between 420p, 720p and 1080i/p.

I just want to get the best picture I can out of the wii. I don't think anybody mentioned above that they thought they'd be getting a HD signal out of it...

480p is much better than 576i.

    Don't be ridiculous.

Yep, don't remember ever saying it wasn't, I was just pointing out, for anyone who was expection HD from the Wii, that it is not HD. 480p 60Hz is EDTV, better than yer TV signal, but not even as good as a devent DVD player at 576p60.

Not trying to start a fight here, I was just posting some possibly useful info, and clearing up some confusion over HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

Well the component solution is looking the best for me, my gamecube doesnt look too good on my HDTV with composite cables (pretty fuzzy) so I can only assume the Wii will look about the same...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

You said 480p was lower res than PAL tv signal. To someone unfamiliar with the terminology - that would be very misleading.

Anyway, as you said - 480p = EDTV. As for the difference between 480p and 576p - its minimal.

480p is better than 576i as that is actually only 288 lines compared to 480.

576p is not applicable with the wii so it was pretty pointless you even making that comparison.

    Agreed

Composite is utter sh*t alround. Anyone spending €300+ on a console to use composite phono needs their head examined, and the scart block included does not make the picture any better, your still getting a composite picture.

RGB scart offers best option to CRT users and is €20 extra
Component offers best option to HD-TV users and is the same.

Why do they need their heads examined?!?There are going to be plenty of very happy WII users runing from the composite cables.

I, for one, do not really care that much. If I cared for crisp clear gfx I'd spend the 300 quid on the gfx card from my PC. Anyway @31 my eye arnt as sharp as they once were <I get free AA>.
RGB scart offers best option to CRT users and is €20 extra
Component offers best option to HD-TV users and is the same.

Saying that I just checked and me TV does have an RGB scart socket, so if i can get it I will get better a cable; if it is not too dear.

Still it is all about the content and controls for me. Gfxs are a distant 3rd place.

    Pablo

Just testing out the MadCatz component cable now. It's excellent quality compared to the one shipped with the console. Mario 64 looks really sharp and colours more vibrant. Well worth getting.
