Im looking to buy someone a present of a fairly decent bottle of whiskey. I passed by the Celtic Whiskey Shop at the top of Dawson St and saw a bottle of Jameson Special Reserve in the window. Has anyone ever had this? Is it any good? Or can you suggest any other decent whiskey?

My limit is about the €100 mark if that helps.

    Thanks in advance.

Middleton Very Rare is considered to be one of the best Irish whiskeys around.

    20 year old.

    €120 in Dunnes Stores

I dont really drink whiskey but I had some last summer and it was very plesant - not harsh

[edit] It is made by the Jameson Distillery btw [/edit]

I'm also looking for a good whiskey for a gift for somebody.

My budget is not as much as the OP's but it's for an Amercian guy who likes his Irish whiskey so I wanna get him something that can't be bought in the US. So something good, not too pricey but only available here... could somebody suggest something?

    Cheers,

    M

12 year old jameson is pretty decent, about €35 I think.

Middleton Very Rare - would that be on sale in all Dunnes Stores or just the bigger ones?

And redbreast whiskey, havent heard of this one before. Is it widely available or will I have to hunt for it?

    Thanks for the replies btw.

Well, it's in my local Dunnes ( Blanchardstown centre ) but I also saw it in a few smaller offies.

Just ring around a few place and ask. Its fairly well know so most places should have it or at least heard of it.

    Best of Luck

All good off licences will have a bottle or 2 of Midleton Very Rare.

This is definitely the one for giving. Comes in a wooden box with numbered cert and if he is ever in Midleton he can sign his name in the register against his bottle number.

    Go for the Midleton, definitely.

Bought myself a bottle last christmas, still havn't finished it... one for occasions.

Havnt checked my invitation since opening it but I dont think you have to go to Midleton to sign the register, I believe thats in Dublin. Though maybe im wrong, been a while since ive looked at it.

Agreed, I got a bottle for christmas last year, and there's only a few shots taken out of it so far.

Midleton is definetly the finest whiskey you can get. ;)

Yeah, as I recall you can either go to Midleton or to the Jameson distillery in Dublin. I bought a few bottles of this while living in Fermoy in '92. I should have gone to Midleton as it was only down the road! I still have a bottle that only about one shot was taken out of, and hasn't been touched in years! Shame on me, but I went off whiskey! :o

I agree with the other posters, it's definitely a really nice sip. Always thought it was like butter melting on the tongue. Damn, I'm getting a grá for a sip now... :D

this is probably a case of "if you have to ask then you cant afford it" but how much does the average pub charge for a measure of middleton? Wouldnt mind giving it a try....

A colleague over from England got a couple of shots of this in a hotel here and paid €13 for each (well, he was celebrating a promotion and it was paid for, but still :()

Well when you do the math its about the right price.

Avg Whiskey is about €20 - €30 a bottle and the pubs sell for about €4 a shot.

Middleton is one of the best. Costs €120 and its about €12 ish a shot.

I think its good value wrt drinking in pubs.

if you call into the Jameson experience in Smithfield you can get a limited edition (think its a 12 yr-old blend) which comes with a personalised label (you decide what's on it)....tis a great idea for a present for a whiskey drinker.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey 21 Year old
    $124.43

    Connemara 12 Year Old
    $112.20

    Old Comber 30 years old
    Priceless

Redbreast 15 year old pure pot still. It'll cost you €90 in the Celtic Whiskey Shop and it's something else. I don't know of another shop where you can find it - it's pretty rare (note: not to be confused with the 12 year old Redbreast).

I've only brought myself to pay for a measure in Dublin twice now, the first cost me €16 in the Vault and the second (actually in Naas) cost me a whopping €24 for a single measure. That was in the Osprey hotel before a night in Time. I really had a hankerin for it that night, didnt bat an eyelid at the price of it though that could have been the 4 or 5 measures of it I had at home before I went.

I havn't tasted any better than Midleton, which reminds me its about time to get another bottle in.

any whiskey over lets say the nominal €35 mark is going to be "good", bushmills have a few very good offering ranging from €75-€200, middleton is always a good runner as it comes with the wooden box and gift cert.try celtic whiskey, or the wine centre in kilkenny has a remarkable range of both whisky(eys)and bourbons
