    Uncapped Joyce wins Ashes call-up

Joyce has yet to play Test cricket for England
Middlesex batsman batsman Ed Joyce is to replace Marcus Trescothick in England's squad for the Ashes series.
The 28-year-old Irishman has only played three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match for England so far.

But chairman of selectors David Graveney described him as a "highly promising player" who could cover a number of batting positions.

Trescothick returned home from Australia on Wednesday after a recurrence of a stress-related illness.

Coach Duncan Fletcher has revealed he had concerns about Trescothick's mental state for several days and at one stage consideration was given to flying his family out to be with him.

"On Sunday the problem seemed to reoccur with Marcus. We had a meeting and at first we decided that maybe the best thing would be to bring his wife and kids out here early.

"On Tuesday morning I called another meeting. I was going to discuss whether he would fly back and not let his wife come out here.

"At that point - where I'd have to speak to him with a very difficult decision which I was very uncomfortable about - it was taken out of my hands," said Fletcher.

"Marcus came off the field in the afternoon, and there was a recurrence of the problem he had in India [earlier this year].

"I left it to the doctor to sit and have a chat with him - and after a while, we spoke and said it was best if he went home."

Joyce, meanwhile, will join the rest of the England squad next Monday.

But it is unlikely he will make the team for the opening Test in Brisbane three days later unless one of the other batsmen on tour suffers an injury.

He was chosen ahead of Academy team-mates Rob Key and Owais Shah, both of whom have previous Test experience.

Two articles in the papers today Sunday Trib and Sunday Times, the Turbine suggested that Joyce was English by the British media unless failing when he's Irish again. I have not once seen him refered to as anything other than Irish.

Also they suggested some rumblings of disscontent in the Ireland set-up something the editor of Wisden Cricketer did'nt accord with in his glowing ST article.

Both drew style comparisons with "Lord" Gower so I hope he took some googles with him! :)

He's eligible for residency reasons. It's a rule in cricket that x number of years living in a country makes you eligible to play for them. Look at the Irish team - Andre Botha (South African), Jeremy Bray (Australian) etc.

And he wants to play at the highest level possible - that's Test level. He eligible, good enough and wants to. That's good enough for me. Good auld Irish begrudgery however is bound to make the papers soon though.

Reading todays paper there's a possibility that he might even get to play in the first test tonight due to another injury.

The BBC profile of Ed says he was born in Dublin. I thought he was born in Bray. Probably from the same copy writer who, for years, showed the European Open on Live on Sky from "The K Club, Dublin" :D

England batsman Ian Bell is set to play in the first Ashes Test after testing his bruised left wrist in a lengthy net session in Brisbane on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old was doubtful after being hit by a delivery from seamer James Anderson during practice.

But unless there is an adverse reaction to his workout the in-form right-hander looks set to start on Thursday.

Irish-born Ed Joyce was standing by to make his Test debut at the Gabba but that now looks unlikely to happen
The loss of Bell would have been a blow to England and forced another batting rethink.

After Marcus Trescothick's withdrawal following a recurrence of his stress-related illness, he was lined up for a promotion to three, the position from which he made 132 in the last warm-up match against South Australia.

The Warwickshire youngster struggled against the Aussies in 2005 but he has since re-established himself in the middle order.

He made three centuries in as many Tests against Pakistan this summer to take his total of runs to 1,287 in 18 Tests at an impressive average of 47.66.

Crazy rule not used in any other sport!!
Well you are either one nationality or the other.
You cant have your cake and eat it!

The residency rule largely used by England to faciliate SA players playing for England..Lamb, Smith, Peterson etc etc....
