Read this article tonight on sherdog. I think it will of interest to anyone with even a passing interest in MMA and possibly even martial arts in general.
With the growth of MMA here in Ireland just wondering what people thought about the article and the ten points , does MMA need to evolve further ?

I think a good idea for judging would to have a clinch, a ground and a stand up judge. So the clinch judge would compete activity in the clinch for both fighters and give a winner/loser outcome for the x rounds. Same for the other ranges.

This might rule out the problem of judge A loving takedowns and scoring them more heavily then triangle attempts or a BJJ foundation judge not giving enough credit to the clinch.

A problem I can foresee is having a close fight with neglible clinch difference and that being a deciding factor in the outcome.

The system works fine, it just that some of the judges, especially in the UFC, don't seem to understand all aspects of MMA.

I suppose the rules will keep evolving gradually as different things come in and out of fashion. After all, it's unlikely that something as dynamic as MMA will stop evolving after only fifteen years.

I have to say, I find Gymrabbits idea very appealing. Anyone here with any judging experience that could shed some light on how feasible this might be?

I think they need to acknowledge good submission attempts. Renato Verissimo came very close to choking out Matt Hughes in the first round of their fight with a triangle and he went on to lose the decision which he most definitely should have won. Damage should also be a factor in the decision too, look at Bj Penn vs. Georges St.Pierre. Bj spent went partying after the fight and GSP spent the night in hospital.

That and Frank Shamrock does need to fight, I'm sick of listening to 'What if Frank Shamrock fought...'.He's only fought an MMA newb in the last few years and everyone still has him on a pedestal. The guy's only 33 for crying out loud! He should be fighting regularly!

I would disagree with most of those.

In my own personal opinion I think foot stomps and elbows on the ground should be done away with.

I kinda agree with the elbows on the ground getting cut out, they lead to many cuts and thus stoppages from cuts, instead of a clean KO or sub...

I understand about the elbows but what's wrong with foot stomps?

Foot stomps lack skill and grace and encourage crap take downs instead of clean crisp take downs-
