Kinda suprised a relief road between Kilkenny and Cork sides is required and as they have proposed that much why not continue it back round to the N8?

If they do continue this on round north ("future connection to N8 Abbeyleix Road" is marked on the second map) then there will be very little traffic left going through Durrow, what with the complete bypass of the town to the west/north by the M7/M8 between Portlaoise and Cullahill.

    What a waste of money.

    A. If they were going go through the bother of builiding a "relief road" they might as well add a 100m to link up with the other side of the N8.

    B. Virtually no traffic would go from the N77 to the cork road, most of the traffic crosses north towards Abbeyleix(N8) or Borris in ossary(N7) can't remember the R road.. This from what I gather?

Totally agree- virtually all the N77 traffic is headed north to the Midlands, West and Portlaoise. What is rreally needed is a northern bypass with decent link to the M8/7 at Ballacolla. Maybe that castle (ruin) stands in the way?
Related to the N77 is the realignement works right at the Laois/Kilkenny border outside Durrow. Apparently theyre meant to start next year and are badly needed as this stretch of road is an accident blackspot with big humps and hollows.

Plan II - is for a road to cross to the east, over the river and onto the N8 north of Durrow.

I guess the cost of building a bridge over the erkina river means that the current plan is going ahead instead.

The street along the N77 is quite narrow, couple that with a botched street realignement in 1998 causes much congestion when two artics meet.

The problem is locals who think they can park where they like. :(

The R road is the R434 which links the N8 to the N7 near Borris in Ossory.

OP's link is dead now - and the M8 has opened in the meantime. Is there any need for this road anymore?
