My daughter has asked Santa for a DS with Nintendogs this year.

I'd like to get another game to give her a bit of variety. Can anyone recommend some games for the DS that are suitable for a 6 year old.

She really likes the Spyro games for the Playstation, particulary the first 2, which have a lot of running around and flaming things in them. But I've read that the 2 Spyro games on the DS are not that great, and are a mix of 2D and 3D.

    Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

My now 7 year old girl got Animal Crossing last Christmas and she still plays it every day.It is very good she writes letters to the other characters does her chores everyday. To be honest its the perfect game for a child, and adult. She also has Princess Peachs ,never plays it.She wants another game for christmas I have been looking at Cooking Mama and Horsez and these seem quite good .

If she likes spyro, maybe mario 64 DS would be a good bet. The original decently implemented 3D platformer, and I think still the best of it's style. I've also been hearing good things all around about dragon quest: rocket slime, for more information on that, see the other thread on this board. Animal crossing is also a good call, as would probably be warioware touched.

Maybe a good listing of reviews for various games might help?

Meatacritic does a good job. At least you can filter out the dross and look at the top rated games and choose from amongst them.

Possibly something simple like zookeeper might be good? Its a pattern matching game and quite addictive (no violent content either).

    New Super Mario Bros
Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime (you'll need to order this online)
    Animal Crossing
Yoshi's Island DS (released in December)

DQ would be way over her head, it's a 6 year old.

Personally I'd recommend something like Electroplankton

    Wario Touched!

I love this game and so does every girl I know. Its basically a collection of mini-games and you have to complete them. They all take place on the touch screen. You start off with a little over 5 seconds for each mini-game and the game goes on until you loose all your lifes with the amount of time you have to complete each game going down as the levels increase.

As you progress through the game you unlock a series of toys to play with which are in the toy section. This game kept me entertained for months when I first got the DS and I enjoyed it more than a lot of other games available even though it is a very simple game.

It was a launch game so it might be hard to find but on the plus side it should be cheap. Might be worth checking out preowned sections in game stores and you'll get a cheap copy of it if you can't find or don't want to get it new.

Here's a link to gamespots review of the game which should give you an indication as to whether you think it is suitable for your child or not:

Personally I didn't find it too repetitive and I think the reviewer might have been getting bored of the series because he had played the earlier iterations in it more than because the DS version is repetitive. There are over 150 mini-games in it and although they do sometimes involve repeating similar things like drag this here or poke this etc.., it is still a lot of fun for a good while.

    Animal Crossing
    New Super Mario Bro.
    Wario Ware: Touched
    Mario 64 DS

All the above are really good games and are well suited for a young audience.

The best thing is that the last two games are pretty old so you should be able to pick it up cheap enough...

    Hope that helps.

My younger sister (7) got a DS for her birthday, along with Super Princess Peach, which she loves. I lend her my games too, so have a fairly good idea what she likes.

    Super Princess Peach
    Mario Kart DS
    Sonic Rush
    Nintendogs
    Animal Crossing

And GBA games can be played in it too, and the game she seems to like best from it:

Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Hope these posts help you :)
