It’s a tricky one to call since you can’t really compare both games to each other. It all depends on what you're looking for. The strength for Neverwinter Nights has always been in the multiplayer aspect of the game and the user generated content (modules).
If multiplayer is important then there’s no contest, nwn2 is your man in this case.

For out of the box single player I think I would give it to oblivion but only because it’s more open ended. The one major annoying thing for me about oblivion is the frequency of the ruins, walk random direction for 2 minutes bang ancient ruin with dungeon that looks like it was drawn on your old grid paper.
I prefer to feel like I’ve actually happened upon something special, so less would be better in my opinion. But if hack and slash is you’re thing then maybe oblivion is for you (but Dark Messiah might be a worth a look).

As I said before nwn is known for it user generated content as is oblivion, while there is more at present for oblivion I would say if the quality and volume of modules released for nwn2 is anything like nwn then once again it a no brainier, but nwn2 still has a good bit of catching up to do on that front.

Cheers Rev,im kinda leaning towards NWN2.
Quick question, recently im having big ping issues with my eircom 3meg connection so i may suffer from high pings at peak times.
Fps titles seem unplayable for me with above usual 30-50 ms [i get 100-300 at peak times recemtly] damn eircom
WOW on the other hand seems fully playable with 200-300 ping, can the same be said for NWN2?
Also what way does online work? im guessing you form a party and play single player missions together,if so can i just join pick up games and play different quests or missions if you know what i mean?
Or is it a case of if i start say at game neginning online with a party do i have to party with them always?
Sorry for noob questions but i never played NWN1.

I played Gothic 3 demo, some nice touches but felt far from a finished game even for a demo.
Played Dark messiah demo also via steam ,it felt like a tomb raider type game to me and not an rpg, maybe im missing something.

Im basically looking for an rpg type game that will give me replayability, like wow for example once i hit 60 i levelled up different classes etc.

You're kind of on the right track. NWN was never that bad for ping as say fps and we did have people on idsn play in the games we had and have no real problem. If your connection could handle wow it can easily handy nwn. I've no reason to believe that nwn2 should be any different.
While there is a limit to your characters advancement its not such an issue since you'll typically have multiple characters running for different campaigns and on different servers.
People typically pick a module from somewhere like the nwvault. These can be once off modules or one of series of modules in a campaign, normally with the same group of players. In many ways it is very similar to actual PnP play and I would say its the closest there is to it yet.
But you are not limited to this style of play, there are many persistent worlds which have typically have more adhoc groups and offer similar things to there larger mmorpg cousins. I played on 3towns a good bit.

In many ways NWN (& 2) Could really be viewed as a toolset for the D&D 3.5 rules and framework for multiuser play. As such its constantly offering new things and getting expanded.

A few of the guys here played games for a while, so if you did a search on the forum for neverwinter you might get an idea of the style of play.

In pretty much every measureable way Oblivion is a vastly superior game. So I'd say only go with NWN 2 if you really really want some D&D type adventuring.

I'm enjoying NWN 2 right now, but if I had to choose which was a better experience, Oblivion blows it out of the water.

Would agree with you on oblivion being average.

All the NPCs feel identical, all the dungeons are pretty much identical, all in all it's a very shallow game.

It just seems to lack character.

Have played Oblivion quite abit and am just starting NWN2. I love Oblivion when i first got it but I have to say I did just find the mission's repetative and boring. Go in dungen/tomb kill goblin's trolls etc.. Was good for awhile but it lacked alot. Have to say it was good graphic's IMO and the game play was decent. only started NWN2 yesterday so i am holding off my opinion for abit there.

At least Oblivion wasn't riddled with game breaking bugs.

I literally had to abandon my first game of NWN2 because it got completely stuck. I was level 12 or so. I'd guess about 50% of the way through the game.

    Minor
Theres a part where you have to go and get blessed by five statues. This is absolutely critical to the story. One of the statues for me just said "You cannot use this object when in combat". I wasn't in combat. Nothing could fix it. Resting, leaving the area, reloading, restarting. Nothing. I just had to give up.

Aside from that, the graphics are awful given the requirements.

    EDIT:

And patching it didn't work either. I hope to God the patch will prevent it from happening again even if it can't undo it, or I might find my second game clam up in a few gaming hours time.

Oblivion is very pretty, but when you get right down to it it's really rather dull and samey. I haven't played NWN 2 much yet (only at a friend's house), but I'm hopeful. The original was great fun with multiplayer games, I'm looking forward to trying that aspect of it. Could have a lot more potential than Oblivion.
