Sony DAV-S300 not recognising disc

I have a Sony DAV S300 home cinema system that I've had for years and years. But recently it's been acting up. For about 2 years now, I've been getting the disc dirty error message, even on brand new discs. But with persistence I would get it to play eventually.

But now, it seems to have stopped altogether. If I put in any amount of brand new undamaged DVD's, it won't recognise them. It asks me to insert disc.

What could be the problem and is it fixable?

Using a cd-dvd cleaning disc sometimes helps. These brush dust off the lens. Not sure what else you can do

It's either a dirty laser as eolhc mentioned, or else the laser has failed.

I actually tried that, using a cleaning disc but it didn't recognise that one either.

If the laser has failed, would I be better off buying a new setup or are they easily fixed. Don't particularly want to fork out for a new system you see.
