Just had interview

Just had an interview there for a job that I would really really like to get.

I think the interview went ok. Thinking back about it, I may not have seemed that enthusiastic about the job (oh boy I am – very excited), just that I was nervous etc. Could have perhaps sold myself a bit better.

They asked me towards the end of the interview was I interested in the job. This kind of sung me because I thought I was showing great interest. I saw it as a bad sign – having to be asked if the position interested me. Oh well, no point doing a post-mortem I guess – said they would let me know next week after meeting more candidates. Guy in job agency said that he would get back to me later on with feedback from interview. Am hoping its good.

I've gotten that for most jobs - "Are you *sure* this job will interest you? Will you be here in six months time?". It's never been an issue.

There's no point in doing a post-mortem. You can't even hope to guess what the interviewers thought of you.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

You know, Agency people really have to be the most annoying people in the world. I was told in a phone call Monday that he would get back to me with feedback from the interview later that evening.

Did I hear anything? No. I emailed him there this morning and nothing back yet. Would you takes this as a bad sign?

Dont put any pass on agencies......they deal with you how they please and probably havent heard from the company yet....then when their is commision to be made they will be licking your behind!
Any interview i have done i have been asked the questions above and got the job, if they dont think your the right candidate they wont ask you are you sure your interested!

Just an idea as to why employers delay getting back to you after an interview.
Often if employers have selected you as their 2nd choice, they will wait until they get an okay from their first choice before telling you. The other lower choices, 3rd 4th etc. will be told immediately about their failure.
Also you should call the agency and not email them if it is important.

He was supposed to ring me Monday evening.

I agree with one of the posters up there. He hounded me looking for me to take the interview. Yes, anyways, I was delighted to get the interview, but they wanted to interview me straight away, according to him. I took 2 hrs annual leave cause he put so much pressure on me to take to interview Monday morning (I only sent my CV that Thursday afternoon!).

I obliged him. Now when it comes to the other way around, nothing. not even an "I havent heard anything yet....will keep you posted....."

I've had the very same experience from an Agency and called them again today asking for an update and they haven't heard anything from the company either but they don't care that you are anxious to know more. You've already contacted the Agency so wait until Monday before giving them a call. You've got to lick everyone's arse until you sign that new contract.

Come back to the OP, I'd make it my intention to state how I want the job very early in the interview so there is no doubt of my enthusiasm. If you prepare well you can over come the nerves with a memorised script of answers to typical questions. Course I've still not got that job yet either...

Well, he emailed back there and said "they (company) were very very vague in feedback.......you did a relatively good interview".

I asked him what in the name of god that nonsense meant. Id say he doesnt know himself

Do you really want that job you interviewed for?

Would you really like to get it? (or at least max your chances).

    If Yes...

Then RIGHT NOW, go out to the nearest card shop and buy a nice thank you card/note and send it to the person who interviewed you. Thank them for the interview and their time, and say you are really interested in the job.

If you cannot get it in the post tonight, go back to where their office tonight, with had written envelope to person who interview you (marked Private) and drop it into the letter box.

I have seen this swing the favour for many people I sent out for jobs over the years...

And anyway....its a nice thing to do! might make someone feel good about themselves tomorrow. good karma.

PS I m an agency person, so we are not all bad! ;-)

Oh I know ye are not all bad! would never think that ;)

What do think about the above statement from the Agent? In what circumstance would you tell someone that.

Im afraid I live a good bit away from where the interview was, so wouldnt be possible to drop off a card. Was extremely polite to the manager and HR manager who interviewed me and shook hands and thanked them for their time. They were really really nice people actually. Which is bugging me why, as the agent said, they are being vague?

I know ultimately I will have to play the waiting game, but just thought a bit more feedback would have given me an indication.

Having read your posts in the Agency Slating thread, I do think you are one of the good guys (despite my bitter cynicism usually directed towards recruitment consultants :)), but I'm sorry, I really can't see how this will achieve anything.

I believe in Karma. That's why I know all the recruitment agents who have ever shafted Boards.ie members and the greater public will end their days asking if "you would like fries with that".

    To Dellas:

I would guess, as others have said, the guy in the agency does not know yet. He probably called the company after you interviewed, and either go no contact with Manager, or no answer.

See what I usually tell my guys I got out for jobs, assume there is at least 2 other agencies working on this, and the company is also looking themselves either through ads, or asking their staff to send their buddies in. meaning that there is probably other candidates involved the we do not know about from other sources.

So I think, it just a matter of playing the waiting game. but do follow up with agency guy, use common sense on how often. a call today, an email tomorrow etc. sometimes when you have calls, emails, CVs, and Software Databases, all coming at once, we do loose track.... (some more than others, and some never are on track...thats the bad guys).

Assuming the agency guy has no other candidates in before you, he probably is in the same position as you with company, he is calling and emailing them, and maybe their holding out as they want to speak to a few more people, and he the akward position of having no news from you and getting none from them.

Just off topic...it has happned when I had people to interview with companies, and all is going well, then process stops, and not a returned called, email nor fax from the company, after us spending hours for free, going off getting CVs, speaking to candidates, setting up interviews etc. which is just pure bad manners on the companies behalf, yet its the recruiter that gets the blame.

As I said the Thank You note is a nice gesture, and will make you stand out form the competition, and also show your keen, and will show you in a better light. Its worked many time for my candidates or friends who were getting their own jobs, and I coached them on interview etc just to help them out.

    To Tom:

Yes, re the thank you note...of course I am for real. The proof is I have seen it swing jobs for people when it was a narrow call between 2 people.

Also is just nice to say "Thank You " for anything, unfortunately in this modern fast world, many people have forgotten this nice little gesture.

I try to make it a habit to send thank you notes, emails, etc to people.

In fact, the 1st email I got this morning, was someone sending me a Thank You email for something I did for them (a tiny little favour), and I was glowing happy all morning becuase of it, and think of the person in a great light! :-)

    Namaste!

    Gerry

    Thanks for the reply millionaire.

I will just have to wait (like everyone else). I have a job already, but this is a dream job. Funny how it happened though: I submitted my CV to that particular agency about 3 years ago (probably even longer) and never heard from them.

The area I studied in was a pretty unusual choice so jobs are even harder to come by (especially in the part of the country I live in). So I was stunned when this particular agency rang with this particular job in this part of the country.

No point in keeping after the Agency guy. Im sure when he hears something, he'll let me know.
