I've a 10Gig Windows Backup File that I want to transfer across to my Iomega 250Gb External USB Drive. But even though theres 100gigs+ free space on it, Windows tells me that the external volume is full?

Any ideas? Running XP Home btw.

If you external HDD is formatted as FAT32 the maximum file size is 2GB ..

I had the same prob with my iPod and a 4GB VHD file.

Either change the format to NTFS or use a compression utility to span the file to multiple smaller files

I'll check that - but surely the 250gig drive from Iomega would have come out properly formatted? Or is that a dangerous assumption to make :)

NTFS can only be read by Windows NT/2000/XP so if this for use with Mac or Linux then well it will be formatted as FAT32.. FAT is by far the most common when you are using File systems between different os types..

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed?

EDIT: Never mind, what I was fishing towards apparently doesn't apply to USB devices.

    The max file size for FAT32 is 4GB, it's 2GB for FAT16.

Whatever it is, it was the FAT32 formatting that was the bother. Formatted to NTFS and she's backing those bits up.

    Word.
